Lake Tahoe/Reno

An old school roommate and I have set up a last minute trip to Reno/Lake Tahoe the middle of July, and I'm looking for suggestions re places to stay/things to do. I've never visited the area and we are interested in some hiking/outdoors activities (but expect big crowds this time of year) as well as some nightlife. Any spots that are "off the beaten path" but accessible to many areas? ANy and all suggestions/pointers from the fodors community greatly appreciated. [email protected]

Also wondered about South Lake Tahoe/Stateline vs. other locations for lodgings and how long it takes to get to various spots around the lake...

Raft down the Truckee River. It's really fun on a warm day. Stop along the way and picnic. There are some areas that you can stop.

Tram up to High Camp in Squaw Valley. There is a pool and giant jacuzzi at the top as well as a year round ice rink for skating. Also has a large bar . Lots of lounge chairs around the pool and spa.

Take the new gondola from near the Embassy Suite in South shore up to the viewing area. Can picnic up there as there are tables and chairs/benches. Then take it to the top and hike around. Great views.

Spend a day at the beach at Meeks Bay. Nice sandy beach on the west side. Has a snack bar with grilled food. They also rent paddle boats, etc.

Visit historic Chambers Landing on the west side. Go during happy hour for a chambers punch.

Visit the Historic Tallac site in Camp Richardson. More info: http://www.r5.fs.fed.us/heritage/047.HTM

Visit Sugar Pine and take a tour of the Mansion.

Take or rent bikes and bike around the lake on the well paved bike paths.

Tahoe is in the mountains and while the two lane road can be annoyingly slow in some areas it's not exactly like disneyland in terms of crowds. More people on the weekends than during the week. If you're going during the week in truly mid July it won't be too bad. By the last week in July it's starting to get busier. It's also brutally busy for the 4th of July.

Have fun!!!
