Lake Tahoe Newbie Thanks You!

We are back from our great California adventure and I'll do a trip report on the whole thing, but wanted to thank you for our WONDERFUL two days in Tahoe. Tahoe is a big and diverse lake and I could not have done this just from the computer. So thanks to sf7307, janisj, susie, toncasmo, and elnap for all of your input and advice.

After only a day and two nights in Reno--the first day was spent waiting at the airport for our "20 minute delayed" flight. 7 hours after its scheduled departure time the flight was cancelled. Fortunately, United flew out an unscheduled small one. It's also fortunate that SFO has wifi. And decent pizza. And, if I had to give up a day in any city on our trip, Reno would be the one I'd choose. We were just there on Jeff's business -- and the flight delay only cost him the cocktail welcome party. No big loss.

The hotel was nice though (the Atlantis) with an excellent seafood restaurant. If you're interested in Reno I'd recommend it. We stayed in a huge Bar Suite which was very reasonable and comfortable (and one of the few hotels on the trip that supplied robes. I love hotel robes.)

Great gym --which they charge for!!--but Jeff pointed out that they'd rather have people in the casinos than the gym. I reluctantly paid my $7.50 and then made sure I got my money's worth and had the BEST workout I've ever had in any hotel gym. Guess I showed them! Maybe if my gym charged by the session I'd be in better shape...

After his meeting we rented a car (something called Burning Man was going on and the poor young woman at the Hertz Counter was harried and relieved to see we were 60ish and didn't even know about it when we swore not to go) and headed for Tahoe. We took the scenic route there and were not disappointed,

And then there is the Lake. Wow, Mark Twain said that it can cure what ails you. That a man he knew came there to die and got well instead. I get it. Talk about soothing the soul.

The Maurelatos Lakeshore Resort was perfect locationwise. We had a room right on the beach. That was FANTASTIC. Unfortunately the room had no closet or dresser, just an armoire (hald filled with their linens). Even more unfortunately, the walls were paper thin and "our" deck was also a public walkway to the hotel's beach. To top it off, it was by far the most expensive and least comfortable place we stayed during our two weeks. But , the location of my dreams. Though I wouldn't stay there again, I was glad that we did.

It is also across the street from the Spindleshanks, which we loved. Modern American food with very generous portions. We liked it so much the first night that we went back a second. Each time I ordered an appetizer that was enough for dinner. (In DC 4 sea scallops are considered an entree and cost $25-30 at Spindleshanks the scallops spinach were $12-15 --i forget exactly.) I highly recommend this restaurant.

Our full day in Tahoe was spent driving around the lake. We got the CD that described the drive. With the stops that we made here and there (Tallac, Fallen Leaf Lodge, Emerald Bay, etc) it took almost 8 hours. What a wonderful 8 hours. This was the perfect start to our vacation and I do appreciate all of your help.

I'll write about the train trip and rest of the journey later.

Hey glad you enjoyed Lake Tahoe. I had totally forgotten about Spindleshanks.

I've heard those same complaints about Muralatos. We'll have to keep all that in mind.

Your vacay - except for the delays - sounded great! Thanks for reporting back.

So glad you enjoyed Lake Tahoe. Too bad about Maurelatos; it always looked so good from the road. Sometimes there are a lot of drawbacks to a good location.
Looking forward to reading more...

Even the delays were ok. We were comfy with our computers ( and wifi at SFO)' decent food at the airport ( and we were there long enough for two meals), and what we were missing was only Reno -- not Tahoe or any of the other womderful places we went. If we wasted a whole day of a long weekend at the airport it would have been worse. But this was 15 days, we could afford two full days for travel without any real worries.
