Don't miss things in Miami

We are planning our first trip to Florida Aug 1-8, 2009. We are staying in Hollywood Beach. We have 2 adults and 2 kids 9 and 14. What are some "don't miss" things we should do in Miami?

What are some restaurants that we should try?
Thanks in advance.
Tina

Day trip out to the Everglades. There are airboat tours on the outside of the park too.

Go to a Marlins game. Aquarium was decent there but very pricy.

We like snorkeling, surfing. We enjoy waterparks, amusement parks. We do want the kids to find some shells becuase we usually go to Hawaii and there are really no shells to speak of. We would love to go fishing. We love out of the way places that locals love and tourists don't usually go to. This is especially tru of restaraunts. We love all types of food.

You can go snorkeling (and enjoy other outdoor activities) at Biscayne National Park which is just south of Miami - http://www.nps.gov/bisc/index.htm You can go fishing there as well. The park's concessionaire's site is here:

Miami has an excellent zoo. www.miamimetrozoo.com

If you go to the Everglades, be sure to bring bug spray. Weather in August will be hot and humid (usually with afternoon thunderstorms). Be sure to use a good sunscreen, and stay hydrated.

You might want to post separately about restaurants in the area. I hope you have a wonderful vacation!

Right near Hollywood is LeTub
http://www.theletub.com/
Its been voted best burger my everyone nationally.
Cash only, outside, expect a bit of a wait.

Hollywood Broadwalk is a fun place. You can rent banana bikes - maybe not for a 14 yo, but the 9yo will like them. On Sundays there is a cute Farmers Market (if it is still going during the summer.) Also near Hollywood is Young Circle and Downtown Hollywood. Its a great place in the evening for dinner, strolling, and ice cream.

Depending on how long you are here the best snorkeling is in the Keys. Try Key Largo's Pennekamp State Park. There are boats that take you a few miles out tot he reef.

A few other places to eat . . .
Adrianna in Surfside- (Collins and 94th Street)
Peruvian Fusion - I love it!!

Captain Jims

in North Miami
definitely not touristy - amazingly fresh fish - they sell to most of the restaurants in town. Not open on Sundays.
