Well panecott, while you're there in 2012, do check out the Impressionist paintings at the Shelburne museum. What is amazing is that you will see how they originally hung in the Havemeyer's Park Ave apartment- very different from viewing great art in a gallery.

The Havemeyers (the parents) made their fortune from Domino sugar in Brooklyn. Their daughter was a huge collector of American folk art. After she died, her children bought a Greek revival house, had it moved to Shelburne, and had several rooms from the family apartment recreated there. I wouldn't call it opulent, but it's so interesting to see how they lived and exactly what the paintings looked like hung in their dining room.
