Lackland AFB TX Lodging

Searched here for info and found the most recent from 2002. They stated the area around Lackland not very desirable and suggested staying in Town or the Riverwalk. Can anyone recommend a hotel? This is for a graduation in August

Not sure what you mean by 'in town'. As in downtown? or the area surrounding Lackland? I miss driving by on Friday, seeing graduation take place.

Lackland is so close to downtown that would be my preference. Driving to base during the week you go against traffic. Being summer you'll probably find a great deal. I always found it a tad cooler downtown in summer with all the trees and the river. Otherwise, you will most likely find yourself in a hotel along, or very near, a freeway near the base. There are lots of 'Quality Inn' options on Highway 90 very close to base.

AnnMarie, Are you saying, Riverwalk is considered downtown? I read the drive to the Base is just about 15min from Riverwalk, true? But if we are going against traffic it could be more? Is the area around the Base safe? Run down? What hotel in particular would you recommend, is one Quality Inn better than another?

I had to be in San Antonio for business for 2 weeks last year and stayed at a Staybridge Suites near Sea World. There were many families staying there to be in close proximity to LAFB. The nice thing was that you got a decent free hot breakfast and they had a happy hour each evening with heavy hors d'oervres you could make a meal out of, if you wished. There were also excellent laundry facilities.

This was a long drive from Riverwalk, but a couple min to SeaWorld. There wasn't much to see/do around there beside SeaWorld, but I was there for business. I would recommend the property.

cd, the Riverwalk is downtown and if you were to stay there you should not hit traffic in the morning, when graduation ceremonies are held, on your way to Lackland. You would be going against the traffic there. The drive takes about 15 minutes and you would have so much more to do at night / during any free time you may have. We lived there for 20 years and have stayed downtown during return visits. San Antonio sprawls....we lived near Sea World and that is a very congested area. I would look at TA for recommendations on where to stay if no one chimes in. Also, I believe there's an office you can call at Lackland for hotel info / help.

The area surrounding the base is sort of meh. Not a lot going on other than businesses, fast food, motels, freeways. It wouldn't be my first choice.

Once on base, if you can make your way over to the golf course, there is a beautiful view of downtown, not far from the parade grounds.

We've taken the Best Western Plus 2 1/2 miles from Base. It has great reviews.

That's a newer property in a good spot for reaching the base and you'll be out of the fray. It will be a quick trip downtown, if you're interested, and if you have time there's a nice Alsatian settled town, Castroville, just up the road on Hwy 90.

One of our favorite restaurants is nearby on Loop 410. Asia Kitchen,

Enjoy a nice trip and congratulations to the graduate!
