We're flying into Portland and we know we want to stay on the coast, but can't decide between Boothbay Harbor and Bar Harbor.

We'd like suggestions for which area, and we want to stay at an INN or a B&B, no chain hotels, maybe restaurant suggestions too.

They are quite a way apart. Are you prepared for the longer drive to Bar Harbor?

To me, Boothbay Harbor is a wonderful town, but that's about it.

Up in Bar harbor, you've got another wonderful town, plus all of Acadia National Park next door.

If I was taking this trip (and I have) I'd tour Casco Bay in Portaland in the morning, drive to Boothbay Harbor for lunch (lobster sandwich, perhaps) and then up the coast for a snack (Lobster, in Lincolnville) and then into Bar Harbor for dinner (well,last time I had scallops, and a lobster) and then overnight.

My prediction, but I don't know for sure, is that Bar Harbor, being further from New York, Boston, etc., will be less crowded.

It really depends on what you want to do. Boothbay is about 1 hr 45 min from Portland, Bar Harbor is about 3 hrs but well worth the trip. Both are very nice little coastal towns, with tons of B&B's, but Bar Harbor offers much more to do. It is adjacent, almost within, Acadia National Park. (Our family spends a week in Bar Harbor every summer and never runs out of things to do!) Keep in mind that Acadia isn't like the big western parks. You can do easy 1-2 hr hikes and get fabulous views. You could also rent bicycles and ride along the famous carriage trails (gravel roads. There are also numerous opportunities for full or half day sea kayak tours. Although you could probably kayak in Boothbay, there just aren't as many options. If you're into shopping little boutiques for crafts, eating lobster, etc. either destination would work fine. Post more info back and I'll check this thread again. I'm usually trying to get info from this site - like on NYC - so its nice to be able to help someone.

Also, neither town will be very busy for Labor Day. College and school age kids have gone home and it should be very nice. Weather can be unpredictable but is generally nicer than Memorial Day.

We're fine with the long drive, and we love to hike so that itinerary starting in Portland and going THRU Boothbay to Bar Harbor sounds great. I think I'll start researching Bar Harbor Inns and B&B's...any suggestions?
