>>It may just be me, but I don't find Hearst Castle remotely child-friendly (particularly for your two-year-old)

The first time I went to Hearst Castle I was 12, and I really enjoyed it. I agree with Doug and Janis, I can't imagine a child younger than that having any interest at all.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. So we decided to drive up from Anaheim and stop at Morro bay and then do the elephant seals spot near Hearst castle the next day before heading up to Monterey. Might drive through big Sur from Morro bay to Monterey.

Not long to go now and we are getting so excited! Thanks again everyone for your extremely helpful feedback!

Is Highway 1 completely open again? Last year it was closed at several parts of the highway. We had to drive the 101 north to Monterey and from there we drove "a little" back to Big Sur.

Hwy 1 at Mud Creek reopened on July 18th. Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge reopened last fall.

Once you get to the elephant seal rookery you're on your way to Big Sur so you will drive through it unless you double back to Hwy 46 and take 101 to Monterey. You should definitely take Hwy 1 through Big Sur.

If any of your children are prone to motion sickness, be prepared for it on Hwy 1.
