LA to Joshua Tree or Death Valley?

We're travelling to LA area next week and would like to visit a National Park while we're there. Any suggestions on which one is best to visit? We are light hikers.

Hi, Traveler,
It's going to be about 115 degrees F next week in Death Valley, a few degrees cooler in the Joshua Tree area. Even light hiking can get hazardous in those conditions.
That said, Death Valley is much more interesting IMO.
Have you considered Sequoia NP instead? Not a lot further in driving time, but lots more comfortable.

While Yosemite is my favorite placeon earth, Sequoia NP has very nice level hikes in the areas of the big trees, and the cavern area is outstanding. Sorry i don't remember the actual names of the areas, but I hiked this area with my 75 year old dad a few years back. Definately will be cooler.

Thanks for the Sequoia suggestion. How far is it from LA and what is the best route?

Hi, Traveler,
It's about 4 1/2 or 5 hours from central LA, north to Bakersfield then northeast to the Park. Get a good map for specifics.
