Chicago to Washington DC on the Capitol Limited
Our trip from Chicago to DC on the Capitol Limited was fairly uneventful. The train ride itself was measurably more rocky and bumpy than the first one. In fact, the train was rolling side to side so much during our dinner in the dining car, I almost was thrown out of my seat. One of our dining companions actually got sick at the table (I won’t give details, suffice it to say, it was awful).
The next morning the views were much different from the Southwest, much more wooded with lots of Fall colors in the trees.
(lots of photos go here-see link below)
And then, before we knew it, we were in Washington DC and our train trip was over.
Here are the photos to go with part 2:

Coming up, a few days in Washington DC.

The photos were indeed lovely, and brought back tons of memories as a child in the 50's. We lived in LA and visited my grandparents in Washington DC every other year (they in turn, visited us in the years we did not visit them). We took the Super Chief (on the Santa Fe Railroad) from LA to Chicago, but we spent the day in Chicago (I remember mostly my mom dragging us to Lord & Taylor's on Michigan Avenue for lunch) before getting back on the train to DC.
That train was ALL private rooms, no coaches, and we'd have the drawing room compartment that accommodated 3 of us. Bits of that train (including china etc.) can be found at the Sacramento Railroad Museum.

A number of private trains on Trans-Siberian etc. and Silk Road routes usually booked through tour companies, e.g.

Personally I prefer to travel with the locals, but maybe as I get older...

Daniel Williams- I looked at taking the Royal Scotsman in a sleeper recently and was not wowed by the sleeper compartments. They're really small. Currently, they are smaller than an Amtrak bedroom and don't have private toilets. That said, they are in the middle of a multi million pound upgrade and the new ones look incredible! So maybe next year, if the cost doesn't go up too much.
thursdaysd- I would love to take some of those lux trains but alas, they are out of budget. What I liked most about the 1950's train was that in the "drawing room" compartment, there were 2 lower bunks in an L shape. I also loved the look of the dining and bar cars which are much more swank than they are today.

I just realized I never came back to post about our time in Washington DC.
This is the post on seeing the sights; Washington DC Museums and Sightseeing
Vietnam War, Korean War and MLK Memorials, the National Mall, the National Museum of African American History, the Renwick Gallery, the American History Museum. We also spent a day in old town Alexandria VA.
