What's the music scene like in L.A.? What kind of venues are there for solo artists to sing in? Anyone know what the cost of living is in L.A.? How does one break into the music business there? Contacts?

Plenty of places to perform but few places that will pay you - more likely you will have to sell tickets to your own show held at a bar/club and guarantee a certain number of people or pay for tickets yourself. Gotta make contacts. You can live on a waiter's salary in LA if you don't have a car payment.
