Both Melk and Krems are served from Vienna by train service.
austrian rail website is
www.oebb.at
Melk with its Abbey - makes a great visit
www.stiftmelk.at
Krems , a town 25000 + has some good sights - this town 1000 + years old- together with areas of UNd and Stein - now one town - formerly a major Danube River trade point - still has an active harbor.
for sdightseeing
www.krems.at
Gozzoburg is very interesting and now mostly restored.
Train station is not far easy walk to town center 5- 10 minutes-
If you arrive by boat - no need to walk from Boat dock to train and town center ( 3- 4 kilometers )
Frequnet town bus service ' 1 bus line I think-
a sightseeing train in busy times and usually a taxi somewhere.
A good way to see this entire area is the combi ticket offer
found here
www.ddsg-blue-danube.at
includes train ticket trais leave from Vienna Westbahnhof - easy connection to there vis UBahn line U-3
Vienna- Melk Abbey visit
Boat cruise
from Melk to Krems
Train from Melk to Vienna. Train arrives Franz Josef Bahnhof - easy ride via streetcar D back to city center in 10 minutes.
A full day excursion and less than 50 euro per ticket.
Much nicer than a bus tour that limits your time and sightseeing plus costs more too.
