Has anyone used a Kindle guide book for New York that they would reccommend? A browse through Amazon shows either older editions, poor reviews or not reviewed at all.

This is just my two-cents, but the Kindle is not really appropriate for a guidebook, in my opinion. The grey-scale screen doesn't support photos, navigation is difficult, and maps don't appear very clearly in the format since it supports just a single black-and-white page (thus, map legends may often be divorced from the maps themselves, or the content may be so small that it's not readable).

Kindles are great for reading books (mostly non-illustrated fiction and non-fiction), but that's pretty much it.

Inside the Apple has a kindle edition - It is a history/guide book with a lot of walking tours.

Thanks for the feedback, I suspected that guide books may not work well. I have a new Kindle waiting for me at home but I'm travelling at the moment so haven't been able to play with it yet. Seems like a paperback is the way to go.

You might check to see what guide apps are available with whatever phone you use. I've found fantastic travel guides on my iPhone apps, as well as translation apps for most languages.

There's also a set of walking tours called (I think) City Walks that will take you off the beaten path into places you might not otherwise discover -- available for many cities in US and abroad. Should be able to find them in larger bookstores and on Amazon.

I've tried guidebooks on my Sony and didn't care for them. I like flipping pages too much with a guidebook to make it practical.

I agree with Doug_Stallings when he says that Kindle is not for guides or maps. They are great reading books

Maybe you should check out the lonelyplanet guide book. They have always been good.
