Kihei Maui Hawaii snorkel question

I'll be in Kihei on Maui in early May, and wondered where the best snorkeling is. I've never been there, but am a very experienced snorkeler. Would also like tips about restaurants, especially seafood places. Thanks for any help or tips you have!

I like the lava reefs between Kamaole Beach III and II. Also a smaller but nice reef is between Kamaole II and I, near the Hale Pau Hna condos.Entries are super easy with sandy bottom beaches. Parking is good at Kamaole Beach III park on South Kihei road.

And a bit farther away...try the lava points between several of the Wailea beaches - Mokapu/Ulua, Wailea, Palauea, and others. Or go to the end of the road at La Perouse Bay and walk to some small coves with excellent snorkeling. Just be sure to go early in the morning before the wind picks up.

Thanks! Jay, can you define early morning? My early may not be the same time as your early

At that time of the year the trade winds are predictable. At about 11:00 am it starts to get breezy and by 1:00 or2:00 the water has become stirred up enough to impair visibility in exposed areas. You can travel further south late in the day. Ahihii (sp.) preserve below Makena stays calmer and clearer.

Kris, Kihei and Wailea usually don't start getting windy and choppy until the afternoon, but if you go to La Perouse Bay I'd be out there by 8 or 9 AM at the latest if the trade winds are blowing.
