IMO the water is colder in the panhandle than the keys...but I'm a whimp. Also when we have been to Destin in Oct. it is really not crowded but there does seem to be a constant wind on the beach. But, that has just been our experience, we go there in Oct. about every other year.

The two destinations could not be more different.

Yes, Destin will be quiet in October, with miles of beautiful beaches and a "family" atmosphere of condo buildings and hotels.

Key West is a combination of Jamaica & New Orleans, with few beaches and a much wilder ambiance.

Very, very different.

October in Key West is great. Just remember that when you get close to the end of the month, it's time for Fantasy Fest and all the craziness that goes with that.

We were there in early October last year, and it was perfect.

We typically go to Key West over Thanksgiving so the weather should be great there. That being said, we also normally visit the Carolina Coast in October, I'm not sure there is a better time of year. Keep in mind though that Destin is a Summer destination, many places will be closed or probably in the process due to seasonal visitors. Really depends on what atmosphere you are seeking.

KW is great fun . Take note of Kelly M's comment on Fantasy Fest. It's a blast, but the town is very busy. Reservations may already be a tough find

Fun! Fun! My pal and I are planning to return October 9-12. We had such a great time (girls' weekend) last year, we decided to go back again.

You'll love it!

You'll have fun in Key West if you want a party atmosphere. We have been to Seaside near Destin 3 times in October and love the quiet beaches.
You do know that October is hurricane season--I would look at cancellation policies or purchase insurance.
