Key West Itinerary
I am wondering if anyone can help me with some plans for when i am in Key west in May. We will be there sunday-friday, driving in from Ft Lauderdale.
We arrive in FLL around 11am, and were thinking of stopping at Bahai Honda for a few hours to enjoy the beach. Anything we shouldnt miss seeing here?
Monday- site seeing and rent scooters
Tues- snorkle (looking for a fun trip with a reputable company, we are young and don't mind the crowds)
Wed- jet ski and parasail
Thurs- enjoy our resort, explore the shops and go on a sunset cruise.
Fri- drive back!
Would anyone recommend anything else? Must see or do's?
I really appreciate any help possible!

Jackie-Definitely go to Mallory Square at sunset and see the festivities. As to sights, the Key West Lighthouse is pretty cool, great view at the top, Hemmingway House, and the Key West Cemetary. There is also a tour of Key West's Haunted Houses at night which is fun. Do a text search on Key West and you will find more information.

Jackie- You would be much wiser to stop at South Beach for a few hours rather than Bahia Honda... South Beach is 40 minutes from FTL (with traffic) and is a pristine, white sand beach, facilities and plenty of eye-candy.
You also could stop for lunch at any of 40 streetside cafes... you can then hit the road down the keys and be in KW in about 3 hours.... That's the only way to go if you want to make the best of your day...

I definitely would go to the beach either in Ft. lauderedale or South Beach. The beaches in the keys leave a lot to be desired, especially Key West. However, the snorkeling is outstanding. There are several companies there that will take you out on trips. Once you get there you will see kiosks throughtout Duval Street or you can just ask the locals they usually know what is the best deal at the moment.

Bahia HOnda is probably the only beach along the long trip to the Keys. The Keys are great for boating, snorkeling and diving but not off the shore. There's good snorkeling on Key Largo where JOhn Pennekamp park is. There are lots of boats that go out from there to the reefs...then there's Islamorada along the way. That's a wild party hotel, rum runners, a beach and more rum runners. The whole drive down to Key West is long. Everything is on US1 with water on both sides. There are lots of little restaurants along the way. If you want good seafood, stop at something that looks like it's for locals. Even the fanciest restaurants expects you to show up in shorts and sandals. One possibility may be to stop along the way to go snorkeling either from Key Largo or Marathon, spend the night there and then start off the next day. There are not many decent hotels along the way so check for a chain rather than a local motel.
Just be careful with the driving. Unfortunatley too many people die on the way down or back from Key WEst. It's a 2 lane highway and people pass each other or have been drinking.
