Key West Accomodations
My husband and I are going to Key West Sept. 3-6 and are looking for a nice place to stay that is not very expensive, preferably around the downtown area. Any suggestions? We are open to bed and breakfasts as well as hotels.

Could you define "not very expensive"? Prices vary widely and that could mean lots of things. To get an idea of costs, you might check out keywestinn.com. As a rule, hotels in Old Town (which is where you want to stay) are more expensive than inns and B&Bs.

I'd look at Island City House. Nice rooms, try to get one with a veranda, they're great to hang out on. Also has a nice pool. We've also stayed at Ambrosia House, no complaints there either. Last visit we stayed at Merlin Guest House, in a small cottage at the back of the property. Very quiet, it was nice to be able to pretend we were sitting on our own front porch.... All the above properties were under $150.00 during low season. Jean

Jean, could you tell me a little more about your experience at Merlin Guest House cottage? I am debating where to stay in Oct. and the 1 bedroom cottage is available. My husband ,myself, and my older teenage son will be on this trip.I think that he might be happier closer to all the activity? How far a walk would it be to the sunset celebration? Thanks.

Linman, I wouldn't say that Merlin is out of the way. It's on the 800 block of Simonton, so that makes it eight blocks to the gulf and a few blocks over to Mallory Square. But, it's only one block from Duval, and there are lots of shops/bars/restaurants all the way to Mallory Square.
The cottage isn't fancy, sort of weird in that the bathroom is off the living room and the kitchen is off the bathroom. Worked fine for two of us though.
The pool at Merlin is small, but pleasant. Nice lounge chairs, quite a bit of shade. Ok continental breakfast. For the price we really enjoyed it.
Bottom line is, I wouldn't let the location discourage me. Just be aware that the rooms aren't fancy, but they are clean and pleasant. Front desk staff is helpful too.

We stayed at the Abaco Inn in December 2002, a small guesthouse with pretty and spacious rooms but no breakfast (you do have your own mini-fridge). It was very reasonable--I think $90? The location was perfect; it was at the southern end of Duval Street, which is quiet but just a stroll away from all the action (and a small beach). We were very happy there. The owner, George, is wonderful, and the inn is in an actual neighborhood where you can observe Key Westers living their quirky daily lives.

My Husband and I went last fall and someone reccomended to us a place called the Almond Tree Inn. It was perfect - great rooms that were new and spotless - great location close to town and had a small inground pool. They also include breakfast (not much coffe and a roll ) but a nice gesture - I would highly reccomend.

Several years ago we stayed at the Spindrift. It is definitely nothing fancy (I was actually there for college spring break)but it was nice and so convenient to everything. It kind of reminded me of Melrose Place - all the rooms around a courtyard w/the pool in the middle. I don't even know if it is still open, but figured it was worth mentioning.

Jill, Just returned from Island City House and had a wonderful experience there. Stayed in the Island City House property on the third floor. We had a private veranda, full kitchen and living area in addition to a lovely bedroom with antique fuurnishings. The pool area and grounds are so relaxing. Location is great. We will return there.
We walked everywhere...The Schooner Wharf bar and BO's Fish Wagon are just a few blocks away for lunch. We also loved Blue Heaven for dinner, as well as Micheal's, which is just around the block. Enjoy....
