In Key West there may be little difference in many case but the "guesthouses" are often larger (i.e. more rooms) and do not include breakfast. In many areas outside of the keys a B&B is realy like staying in a room in someone's home (albeit a very nice home or we hope so). In KW it's more common (at least in the few guesthouses I'm familiar with) to find that the proprietor does not live on premises (or does so but in a separate apartment). In some cases (such as Jasmine House where I stayed on my last visit), there are no common areas such as a patio or living room in which one can hang out. This is most often the case in very small guesthouses (3-5 rooms). I only stayed in a B&B once before going to KW but staying in a guesthouse there I appreciated the sense of privacy - I could come and go at all hours as though I were in a hotel but had the intimacy and convenient location of a small facility.

I just got back from a 4 night weekend in Key West with 3 female friends (college friends like you, but significantly older). We had a ball. Stayed at the Ambrosia 2 in the 2 bedroom cottage. The place was lovely and in a great location. Very quiet, except for the parrots in Nancy's Secret Garden which backs up to the property. As for nightlife, just walk up and down Duvall and see what music appeals to you. We spent the first 2 nights with the rock band at the Oak Beach Inn and the last 2 with the piano bar at LaTeDa's--very different atmospheres and crowds. Had wonderful food at El Meson de Pepe--Cuban--and a fabulous dinner at Alice's at LaTeDa's, although that's pricey. We were very sorry to leave and I will definitely go back. You might want to check out the Center Court (I think that's right) for accomodations. They rent entire cottages and maybe you could get a couple near each other.

Get a boat or hire a captain to take you out one day. The water there is best viewed from the water, and with that many people, you can rent an entire boat to yourself.

My husband and I went last year, the first week of June. It was HOT, but the humidity really wasn't too bad. My husband's from Ireland, though, so he had some trouble with the heat. We stayed for 6 nights. At first, I was worried to would be too long, but it turned out to be perfect. We had a great time doing nothing but relaxing, eating, walking around Old Town, hanging out in the hot tub (at night, but we had to turn off the heat in the tub, because it was so warm outside), drinking. It's the perfect place for a relaxing and fun break. Also, June is good, if you can stand the heat, because it's not very crowded, and you can get good rates on the rooms.

Oh my God Key West is the absolute best place to party with friends. Stay at a B&B and rent bikes!! Last time I was there I almost didn't leave! It is paradise. I was there in August - hot yes - miserable NO.
