key largo/hotels/snorkeling

My wife and I are visitng family in Boca Raton and plan to take a couple of days and go to Key Largo (maybe fly back out of Miami) in mid Jan. We want our son (16) to have a chance to go snorkeling. Preferably, go on a private charter boat for just our family...

We are looking for suggestions on nice places to stay.. and snorkeling charters, etc.

thanks

In a mere 48 hours we'll be in Key Largo and staying at the Best Western Suites at Key Largo- it's a nice enough place, centrally located and has a snorkeling expedition offered every day. The marina the hotel sits beside is the one all the boats go out of, so you might want to stay one day and check out all the charters to see what kind of crowds they have. Enjoy the visit!

We stayed at the Marriot Key Largo and went diving with It's A Dive. http://www.itsadive.com/ Their website says they will do private snorkel trips. We had a wonderful time at the Marriott and the dive company was great.

We loved the Island Bay Resort in Taverneir, just 10 minutes south of Key Largo. www.islandbayresort.com If you want a terrific snorkeling experience to what many consider the best reef in the 48 states
go with Dave Tolhurst at www.finsupcharters.com-private charters,
knows his waterways, really looks out for everyone.
Have fun!

msalzbank: I thought of something after I posted that also might be important to you. The rooms at the Best Western are townhouses with a pull-out queen size bed downstairs in the living room and the master bedroom up, including two separate bathrooms. (This includes TV's both places and a tiny, but adequate, kitchen.) I remember when our kids were younger and it was tough to plan time around one bath area.

P.S. Not that anybody but us cares, but we now only have 24 more hours.........

The best snorkeling in the Keys is found in Looe Key. It is a reef north of Key West, I'm not sure just where. It is fantastic. The only way to do it is to take a boat ride out to this unbelievable spot where they anchor and you go down. I've snorkeled all over down there -- don't let anyone tell you that you'll find reefs this fabulous off Key West. Looe Key -- unbelievable.
