Aloha Julie! We just returned from our fourth visit to Kauai in as many years.
I would visit Waimea Canyon. If you do, bring a light sweater or windbreaker. It tends to be cooler up at those elevations. There's kayaking on either the Hanalei River (north shore) or Wailua River (east shore),golf everywhere, Holo Holo Charter. They take you snorkeling out to Niihau 18 miles off the southwest coast of Kauai. Warning! This trip can be a very rough ocean going excursion. When we went, out of 26 passengers 5 became seasick. I would recommend Captain Andy's trip instead. When you get to Lihue Airport, while you wait for your bags to arrive go over to the racks of free brochures. There's a great deal of information available and many of them contain coupons for free desserts, discounts on activities and a great deal of info. We used one coupon for a free Hula Pie (enough for two to share at Duke's Canoe Club restaureant located at the Marriott. If you have a chance I highly recommend them. Great view and the food is excellent at reasonable prices. The night we were there a trio was playing Hawaiian music from table to table. If you need more info just e-mail me with specific ?'s. Aloha, Eke

Julie,
The Hyatt is beautiful. Very Polynesian.
Great restaurants. Poipu should be nice in Sept. Just don't limit your stay to Poipu. Take the rides to the ends of all roads (Polihale/Waimea and Kee Beach(Napali).
We've been lucky enough to have gone over for the past 10 yrs (missed the Hurricane Iniki year!)and enjoy it every time. In fact 121 more days until we return!
My first rec is to spend the few extra $$$ and get a convertible. You run into some sudden showers but it's worth the risk because it really is beautiful all over. And some of the smells...
We have taken 2 helicopter rides, a "before and after" Iniki. It's amazing how the vegetation has come back...Hey, it's the Garden Isle!
See a sunset from Polihale. Or from a "sunset table" at the Beach House restaurant..it's about 3 miles away from your hotel towards Spouting Horn.
You can hike the Napali Coast/Sleeping Giant Mountain/Kokee-Waimea Canyon.
Try this website "101 Things to do on Kauai"...
http://www.kauai101.com/indexframes.htmlWe have used "The Ultimate Kauai Guide" as an excellent resource, too.
I you golf, it's worth the $$$ and the lost balls to play the Princeville course..take a camera too. I think after 4:00 p.m., you can rent a cart for $20 and just tour the course. My wife loved that..some gorgeous pics, too.
Kauai no ka oi
Kal
ps...Eke's right on the Hula Pie. You can get it at Keoki's instead of Duke's since it's closer to you hotel. Same chain.
