Kauai/Maui in January
I am planning on surprising my wife with a January trip to both Kauai and Maui for our twentieth anniversary. I am leaning toward the Princeville on Kauai and the Four Seasons in Maui. I'm wondering about the water temperature. Is it warm enough to swim/snorkel in January? Obviously, neither of us has been there before.

Bill, The Princeville Resort on Kauai is fabulous and the north shore is breathtaking. The water temp should be fine, but the north shore gets a little rough in the winter. You'll notice some boat tours don't run on the north shore that time of year. Also, the north shore has more rain. But it's usually a pretty short shower and doesn't ruin your day. If you want more sun, try the Hyatt on the south shore. Hope you have a great time!

Bill, we normally go to HI in Feb. The north shores of the islands are subject to much more rain in the winter. In fact, 4 yrs ago we were in Kauai when a record low was set- 54 degrees. The north shore surf is dangerous during the winter and ocean activities are limited. Check out the Hyatt in Poipu, it's a beautiful property IMHO the nicest on Kauai.
On Kauai make sure you do the helicopter tour of Waimea Canyon, Napali Coast, it's the best tour on any of the islands. Jack Harters is real good.
Maui, our favorite. We have been 8 times. We have never stayed in Wailea so have no personal experience with 4 Seasons. The hotels in Wailea are all very nice. It's the warmest part of Maui. Consider the Trilogy trip to Lanai. Feb. was our 8th trip and the 1st time we did the Trilogy and it was a great day.
If i can be further help, email me, I can give some dining ideas or answer other questions.
Aloha,
Bart

Bill,
I'll be honeymooning in June at the same two properties you are considering. We'll be at the Princeville for five nights and the Four Seasons for Six Nights. I can't wait - heard great things about both. I did hear, however, that the pool at the Four Seasons will be closed from the end of November until Dec. 18th. Normally, the Four Seasons is pretty accurate with their timetable for getting renovations done. So this will probably not be a concern for you in January. In fact, the pool will probably be more spectacular than ever. Have Fun! JB
