Aloha Auntie!
Just gotta love Kauai in the rain ... you're making me "homesick".
Soboyle, the other hotel I was trying to think of in Waikiki is Breakers, www.breakers-hawaii.com/home.html
Both Breakers and Hawaiiana have rec'd wonderful reviews on this board... great price for amenities that include a full kitchen... great for you traveling w/ the bambino!

AuntieM,
I meant the comment about the ave. temp on Kauai being hi 60s.....Won't even mention the all the "broken necks" comment.
But, as you know, the surf on the no'shore can get up to 20-30' in the winter.
Yeah...and it's beautiful the way the spray fills up the Hanalei Valley at sunset, no?

Thanks for the tips on Honolulu, I'll have a look. A earlier poster mentioned the Ohana chain of hotels in Waikiki, and they have a room for $79 at the Ohana reef towers. Seems reasonable, anyone with experience with this property? My other thought is to try priceline for Waikiki, but am a bit sceptical about bidding blindly for a place to spend vacation time.

We were in Kauai in January with our two children a few years ago. It rained every day of the week, and we got quite bored and frustrated with it. Luckily, we were at the Hyatt which had lots of kids' activities so they didn't bounce off the walls. My husband and I braved the weather to snorkel one day with wet suits on, and we lasted about an hour before we were too cold. Not a good idea, but we were desperate!
For our second week, good thing we were booked on the Big Island. Being further south, it was warmer and drier that week, too. Thank goodness we salvaged the last days of our vacation there.
My point is: can you go another month, to better insure the weather? I know rain in Hawaii is better than rain at home, but still you don't travel all that way to be stuck indoors. Especially if its your first trip to Hawaii. Hawaii is so incredible, its a shame if you don't see its best side.
Or, if January it is, I'd say stay at far south as possible. Definitely Poipu if you must do Kauai, or the Big Island. Just my opinion.

Message: Good for you, booking a 15 day trip and using this forum to help you plan. As I posted in my previous reply we have taken three trips in the past ten years. What I didn't mention is that it took us 25 years to return after I joined my husband on his R&R from Viet Nam. By far Kauai is our favorite island and by your post we share similar interests. We have always found this forum very useful, I had just logged on for information on our upcomming Feb 05 trip when I found your post. I will share some information we have found helpful. The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook is great and a fun read for a guidebook. Many posters have shared that the Entertainment Book has saved them money. You can view this book & discounts online at www.entertainment.com. Not as many coupons for Kauai but with spending time on Oahu it might be worth the cost. There is both a Wal-mart and K-Mart on the way from the airport to Poipu. While in Kauai we keep 2 beach chairs, beach mats and a styrofoam cooler in our car. We stock up on bottle water and snacks. What makes Kauai so special is that it is not overdeveloped. That said, you won't find loads of fast food or even restaurants, when we go out snorkeling or hiking we pack a cooler in case we don't want to leave a beautiful location in search of food or drink. We have set up our beach chairs and dined privately in some of the most remarkable locations. The grocery stores have good selections of lunch and dinner items. Even if you have to purchase chairs, mats and a cooler it is money well spent, but first check with your condo manager, our condo has always had a cooler left behind and they have provided beach chairs. We often picked up carry out from local restaurants near our condo and dined on our lanai. If you want suggestions or additional information post your questions. For now I will close.
PS did you book the condo I mentioned in my post? After your stay at Prince Kuhio please post your review.

Thanks for the info about Kauai, yes we did book the Prince Kuhio that you recommended, its a small studio, but will do prefectly for us, the price is great, and we don't spend much time in the room anyway but go out exploring, hiking, swimming, taking photographs etc. I was thinking of buying the entertainment book, but did wonder how much would be in there for Kauai, its always fun to eat at good restaurants at half price, and it gets you to go to places you might not ordinarily seek out. At $35.00 it might pay for itself before the trip is over. MaureenB's post is a bit scary, hope we don't run into that sort of bad luck with the weather during our stay in mid January. But rainy weather can be great weather for taking photographs, much more atmospheric, especially if the sun breaks out and you get mist and rainbows. We'll make sure we bring along rain jackets, just in case.

s'boyle,
"But rainy weather can be great weather for taking photographs....and you get mist and rainbows"
You got that right! In fact, if you hear the Nor Coast is getting hit with BIG surf and the beaches are closed, you may want to get up there and see if the Hanalei Valley is full of sea spray around sunset. Radioactive!!!
And, you may want to check out The Princeville Golf Course and see if they still will rent you a golf cart after 4:00pm just to tour the course. If so, take plenty of mgs or film.
59 mo' days!

15 days on Kauai! That's my kind of vacation!
Try to make it to Hamura's Saimin for a bowl of the most delicious noodles and the best lilikoi chiffon pie you will ever have!
