Kauai Condo
My wife and I are celebrating 15 years of being together with a second honeymoon trip to Kauai. We have a condo at the Embassy Vacation Resort Poipu Point. Can anyone recommend good eating places? What about a place to buy picnic supplies? How high are wine prices? Any thoughts on that part of the island?

Aloha! We own time share at the Embassy and have been going to Kauai for years, so I think I can help you with some recommendations. As for restaurants in the vicinity of your condo, try Keoki's Paradise in the Poipu Shopping Plaza. The ambiance is fun and the food is always good - don't forget to save room for their hula pie, in fact, you can probably get a coupon for a free hula pie from your concierge at the Embassy.
Another restaurant to enjoy is Brennecke's for great fish, and by the way, their deli next door o the restaurant is the perfect place for picnic supplies - they make terrific sandwiches and have all kinds of picnic supplies. The Beach House on Lawai Rd. is a wonderful place to watch the sun set while enjoying appetizers and drinks. We used to like going there for dinner, but they have become too overpriced in our book. Wine prices are probably about the same as in major metro areas - we actually prefer to drink some of the fine microbrews while we're in Hawaii, like Kona Brewing Company's offerings and Kauai Gold. There's just to much info to put in one reply, so I'd suggest you pull up Kauai from the topics section and browse for subjects that would be relevant to your interests. Have a great time and congrats on your marital longevity!

We also own at the Embassy. It is a wonderful property. I agree with Keoki's. They also have a wonderful cesar salad. Next door at the Hyatt is a great Italian place called Donderos. Ask to sit outside on the patio and you will enjoy a beautiful view. The Hyatt also has a few other places to eat but we never made it there. My husband I also honeymooned there and are looking forward to going back again this year - although we are not quite at the 15 year mark. That is great reason to celebrate. If you plan on doing a helicopter tour - I highly recommend Will Squires - they were great. Another great view place to eat is at Whalers - near the Marriott - I think it's more of a lunch place but very nice views.

HULA PIE! Margot-Yer killin' me! This was our 1st trip over where I didn't score at least one piece of that "piece of heaven!"
Also in that center is Tropical Hamburgers for a good, pretty cheap meal or 2. Up the road is Joe's on the Green at Kiahuna Golf Course. Good grub, mtn. views. You can usually see a few rainbows up in the valleys in the early morning if you have breakfast there. Actually saw a triple rainbow there once.
As for picnic supplies, you may want to stop at Wal or K marts in Lihue on your drive down to Poipu from the airport. Probably cheaper there than in Poipu.
The wine prices were really not that much higher than on the mainland, if at all with some brands. They had a good wine selection at K Mart.
You may want to try Safeway or Foodland in Kapaa for wines also. Out on the west end you can try "Da Booze Store".
If you do go up to The Whaler Brew Co. you have to be patient. While it is one of my favorite places, the service is sometimes lacking but as Kathryn mentions, great view. Especially when the whales and dolphins are playing around off the point and the golfers are trying to make the green on hole #13 right below you. I bogeyed it.

I agree with the other posters about Keoki's, Beach House, and Brennecke's. Our "special" place is Roy's (also in the Poipu Shopping Plaza) - great seafood and unbeatable chocolate souffle. In nearby Kalaheo are two good Italian places - Pomodoro and Brick Oven Pizza. Best Thai food we have found is The King and I in Kapaa - a bit far from Poipu, but you'll find yourself driving that way to go to the North Shore at least once.

Hey, boom boom
We leave for Kauai tomorrow (2/13). Our fav restaurants on or near the south shore are as follows:
Casa di Amici
The Beach House
Pomodoro's (located in Kalaheo)
Brennecke's (good seafood, casual dining)
Keoki's (only for cocktails/appetizers;Seafood has not been very good the last several years IMHO)
Brick Oven Pizza (for a fun, relatively inexpensive night out; best pizza ever)
Wine prices are much less than home (Pittsburgh for us) and a surprisingly nice selection at the K Mart and grocery stores. Try K Mart as well for picnic supplies.
Enjoy!

Does anybody have anything to add to or update these great recommendations for a stay at the Embassy Resort in Poipu? Lots of thought went into the postings. They are two years old, however, so things might have changed. We'll be there from March 6 through March 13. Many thanks.
