kauai - car rental jeep vs. convertible
should we rent a jeep or a convertible in kauai? i am worried if it rains all of the time..will we be soaked in a jeep? but we want to do a lot of hiking and hear thta having a jeep makes a lot of hikes more accessible. we are staying at the hyatt in october. two people. what would you do?

I don't know about you but I find Jeep's awfully bumpy. I think it's the way they're built but they start to give me a headache after a while. I'd head over to Orbitz and check how much a car rental will run. Last time we visited San Diego my wife and I were able to pick a nice Sebring convertible and it was all taken care of on the website. I prefer the way they do all the legwork for you.

I just returned from 8 days on Kauai, where I had a convertible. Yes, it rains at some point every day, but you'll soon notice that no one even bothers to stop and put the top down. Neither you nor the interior of the car ever get wet enough that it won't dry in a matter of minutes. Even with big downpours. quite honestly, I would see the need for an SUV on Kauai, except maybe to get out to Barking Sands Beach. That's via dirt cane road, and was kind of rough in places. But everywhere else, a car did just fine. Incidently, I couldn't get the sands to bark.

I agree with Jeff and Crys. We were on Kauai for a week and rented a mid-size car for 4 people. With the exception of one cane road, all roads were paved and passable. We just bumped slowly along on the cane road and the car took it well. (No need to hurry on Kauai!) And we didn't encounter rain that much - nothing that a convertible couldn't handle. Only problem we had was the need to empty all the sand from the car, so we didn't have an extra cleaning fee!
