Junior National Young Leaders Conference- Washington D.C.

I would appreciate any input from anyone whose 6th or 7th grader participated in this Conference. This is not the "People to People" program that I have read about on this board. (However, those posts contained lots of great information, and I'm hoping to get some about this program)

The material says that it is a not-for-profit group who runs the program. In their letter, they actually named the teacher who recommended my daughter. I'm going to speak to her for more information, as well as doing more internet research. We just got the letter yesterday.

The six-day schedule looks very interesting. I would just like to hear from others who have participated in the program.

Thanks!

My daughter was nominated for this program a couple years ago. We were very interested in it until I saw the cost--wow. For a high schooler--yes, for a middle-schooler, no.

I just thought she'd get more out of it with a couple more years of maturity under her belt (though she was honored to be nominated). I do know kids who have gone through the program, though, and it sounds like they had a good time.

I went to the regular NYLC program when I was in high school, and it was extremely memorable and well worth the $.

ChristieP,

Would you know what the differences are between the middle school and the high school programs? Do you think you would have appreciated it as much as a 12-year-old?

I agree with Tess, 12 does seem kind of young. I'm just wondering how "exclusive" these nominations really are, and if there's a chance she will be nominated again when in high school.

I too think that 12 is too young to participate in this program, but I would hate for my daughter to miss out on this great opportunity. She is very excited.
IVK, can you please let me know if you spoke with the teacher who nominated your daughter, and any information you may have been given?
I am very hesitant to submit the application and even more so, the tuition of $1774, but the deadline is quickly approaching.
I have left a message with the counselor whose name was on my daughters letter as the person who nominated her. I haven't heard back from her yet. I also sent an email to the JNYLC expressing some of my concerns. I'm hoping I get response soon.

As a followup, my daughter just received another invitation to participate in the program (two years after the first one). She's still only 13, though, so still too young in my book to go halfway across the country alone for this.

This time it didn't say who nominated her which makes me wonder if they're recycling invitations...
