Joshua Tree accomodation

Hi,

As part of a road trip I am doing in May, I will be visiting The Joshua Tree National Park.
I am looking for somehwere close to the park to stay for a night, what towns are there near the park. Is Twentynine Palms a good choice?

Thanks,

Mark,
Manchester,
England

Hi Mark,
Yes, 29 Palms is a very good choice, it's right outside the park. You could also stay in Palm Springs which isn't very far and has more restaurants and shopping etc. Have fun.

The 29 Palms Resort is a neat old place, once a hideout for early movie stars. We had a little "casita" or separate adobe style mini house. Enjoyed a wonderful dinner outside on the terrace/courtyard. It was also a surprising "bargain".

If you don't mind renting a private home, we found a home on VRBO.com for April 2002. Since we are a family of 5, we wanted additional room without renting two hotel rooms. This is a 3 BR, 2 bath place just outside the west entrance to Joshua Tree for $110/night, but I think there were a couple of others too in that area.

You could stay at the Joshua Tree Inn. It isn't real fancy but it has an interesting history. A lot of the climbing set stays there.

If you're just going to Joshua Tree for the day to see the national park, then staying in Palm Springs is a good idea. But if you plan on hiking a few days, then stay closer to the park, since the drive to Palm Springs is roughly an hour each way.
