Jeep From Thrifty/Any Good

We rented a Jeep on Hawaii (Big Island)a couple of years ago. I don't recall who the rental company was. The Jeep was new and in good shape (comparable to any other rental car). It was a four-wheel drive (which was why we wanted it), but it was an automatic.
FYI, ours was a Wrangler, which means soft sides and zip on/zip off windows. It was fun and funky, but slightly inconvenient on very hot or rainy days, and we had both.

Having been in Kauai in Oct., and having driven both south and north, I don't see why you would need a jeep. We had a midsize car, and was able to go everywhere. I don't think rental car places will allow you to take a jeep off road - did you check? Alamo doesn't allow it's vehicles on any non paved roads. It get hot & humid in Kauai, and we used the A/C in the car and hotel all the time

Aloha, Just got back from Kauai 1-15. Rented from Thrifty but didn't see any Jeeps.
First of all, make sure it IS 4 wheel drive. I thought I heard a rumor they lock the hubs so it stays 2-wheel???
They did have a fairly new fleet, tho. My car, Honda Acord, had only maybe 2000 miles on it. They did go over the car with a fine tooth comb at check out/in!
Not a lot of 4-wheelin' roads. Cane haul roads but the landowners and the police kinda frown on hot roddin' around on them.
As Anthony mentions, check into the "off road" part of the rental contract.
You can take it out to Polihale and drive it around on the beach.
Some beaches are easy to drive on but, once again, check the rental contract before you assume the risk.
Mahalo.

Sssshhh...don't tell anyone, but we did go off-road, and the car was indeed four-wheel drive. We went to a beach that you would normally hike into, but can drive to if you're willing to drive over lava. This is NOT recommended, so you are definitely liable if anything happens.
As I said, I was on the Big Island, and Anthony may be right that there isn't anywhere on Kauai you would care to drive off-road, even if you were willing to assume the risk.
