Jacksonville Beaches in July

My husband and I are going to Jacksonville Beach this summer...we're going to look around the area to possibly relocate...check out jobs...housing, etc. Any suggestions about places to stay? Good restaurants? Fun things to do?

Thanks for any suggestions.

A good local seafood restaurant is Gene's Seafood. They tend to be located in strip malls and frequented by locals. Check out Jacksonville Landing on the St. Johns River downtown. Lots of good restaurants. If you like Bar-b-que you have to eat at Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q. They are located all over Jax. On Beach Blvd. about 1 mile from the Beach is Homestead Restaurant which has been there for years and serves homestyle meals.

Drive south of Jax Beach to Ponte Vedra, a very excluse area. Ponte Vedra has a very nice resort you might want to stay at if you can afford something on the expensive side. Ponte Vedra also has many beautiful homes and new ones being built right on the beach. Guana River State Park with big sand dunes and a quiet beach is also in Ponte Vedra.

The Anheuser Busch brewery is located near Jax Airport and has tours and free beer after the tour!

The dogs will be racing and there are gambling boats. There are lots of golf course and putt-putt golf too!

The best web sites I've found on Jax are: http://bestreadguide.com/jacksonville/ and
http://www.scalise.com/jax/to-do.htm

I could go on and on. I really like Jax as it is not as touristy as other beach areas in FL.

Sorry but I can't help any more with lodging, as we always stay with family.

Enjoy your trip and good luck job & house hunting.

Kelly,

I'd be interested in finding out what you "find out" about Jacksonville as well. My boyfriend and I are considering a move ourselves. Have you found any good relocation information? I've heard soo many good things about the area. I'm in NJ now and it's too cold and too crowded. What made you think of moving to Jacksonville? Best of luck!

You won't be alone in relocating to Jax. I have lived here for 10 years and have seen this city grow at a rapid pace. The cost of living is low, but beach real estate has gone through the roof! There are lots of housing options, but the beach is definitely the place to live!

Depending on what you want to spend, there are quite a few options for places to stay. The Sea Turtle in Atlantic Beach is being renovated right now and is close to some nice restaurants. There is a nice bed and breakfast called Pelican Path right on the beach in Jax Beach. The more upscale resorts are in Ponte Vedra (The Ponte Vedra Inn and The Lodge are on the beach and the Marriott Sawgrass is on the golf course at TPC). For less expensive options, there is a Best Western, Days Inn, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn all in Jax Beach, but none are that great. Let me know if you want more info.

As for restaurants, try The Atlantic, the Rite Spot and the Homestead.

It will be hot in the summer! A fun thing to do is go to St. Augustine, but there is not that much excitement here.

Let me know if there is any other information you need. I live in Atlantic Beach.

Jacksonville is alot of fun, so much to do, especially if you are a beach creature...you have already received lots of good info. A day trip that might be fun is going up to Fernandina Beach via Amelia Island. Beautiful old pirate town of Fernandina Beach, with a terrific state park beach area... but for us the best part is the "shark-tooth" hunting along the state park beach or out at the point where the cafe "Sandy Bottoms" is located. Very relaxing to watch the dolphins, and stroll along the beach looking intently for that "black triangle" - initially, that would be what you would look for - then once your eye is trained, you'll have no problem spotting them...enjoy, I miss it so much!

I have lived in Jax all my life (38 yrs) It is a nice place to live. Although the summers can get VERY hot the winters are mild. In fact we wore shorts this weekend (2/20) One of my favorite places is Ft. George Island. Beautiful old oaks, an old plantation home and still standing tabby slave cabins at Kingsley Plantation. There are many acres of hiking and biking trails at Kingsley. The same for Talbot Island. Beautiful pristine beaches and wild wind blown oaks. My family and I go there often to hike and picnic and get peace of mind. . But we prefer wild and natural beaches to the crazy packed teen scene. Ragtime Tavern in Atlantic beach has wonderful seafood and great atmosphere. The Jax Landing is dead at night, most business is daytime workers. Not that safe of a place at night. In July plan on major heat!
