CAR - YES !!!
perhaps horseback riding day trip to jenny lake. how about a guided jeep excursion. or rent a boat for a day on jackson lake, or kayaks. you are quite close to yellowstone and should probably choose some particular thing to do in the park (it will be fairly busy this time of year and you won't want to waste time in traffic jams). i'd seek advice on this from ppl in jackson on exactly when and where to head)
or maybe rent atv's for a day...
pack a picnic, head into the mountains and just find a cool spot by a stream. a little fishing and hiking together could make best family memories

If you enjoy some fairly easy hiking go to the Lake Jenny dock at 8 or 9am and take the boat across the lake and you will be able to view Hidden Falls after a short walk. Continue on to Inspiration Point for a view across the lake from high above, then a beautiful hike into the heart of the Tetons. A chance to see moose, small waterfalls, and enjoy solitude. Go early because it will get somewhat crowded later in the morning. Check out the national park service web site
for other hikes. You could also drive
down Antelope Flats road east of the Tetons off the main highway for picture opportunities of the two often photographed old barns with the mountains in the background(beautiful). There are buffalo roaming freely around here, so be careful.
There is a tram you can ride to the top of mountains where you can also hike around. That is located about a 30 minute drive from Jackson to the Teton Ski Village.

Be sure to do a whitewater trip on the Snake River. It's a blast on a hot summer day! If you want something tamer, take a float trip within the Teton Park boundaries.

Also, I believe the Snow King Ski area right in town has an apline slide. The kids will love it. Zip lines have become very popular and I wouldn't be surprised if some have been put in either at Snow King or Teton Village, the Jackson Hole ski area.

Have fun!
