My nephew works for a shipping company, based in West Palm Beach. They have just decided to go to their hurricane evacuation plan, which involves employees relocating to their New Jersey offices, and paying for families to fly out. So my niece & her kids will be here in Boston tomorrow night.

Many people mistake the fact of Global Warming for a future where all places are warm. It's much more complicated than that; some places will experience extreme cold temps and some hot.
Of course we cannot stop all human activity, but we will reap what we sow. Or more like future generations will suffer the consequences of our combined ignorance and lack of will to make sacrifices to ensure a livable planet for them.
I see these suburban soccermoms driving around the shopping malls in Hummers that get 11 miles to the gallon. They have children, don't they care what happens to the planet?? It truly baffles and terrifies me how some minds work!!

We already carpool, recycle, have smaller cars available, solar power. How about more nuclear power?
There are over 6 billion people on this earth. Lets be real, it will never happen. Global warming is inevitable, as are hurricanes.

Re: Effects on NYC...
Whatever hit us yesterday morning was crazy. I looked out my window at 6AM and couldn't see a thing. We got 4" of rain in just a couple hours. Upon leaving my building, I saw that they had just pumped water out of the lobby, and the cars outside were flooded in 1.5' of water. Thank God my car is in the shop (someone out there likes me!) because it would have been destroyed if I had parked it in its normal spot!!! Oh, and forget about the subways...it took me 2 hours to get to work, a new record. Several lines were flooded out.
Re: The Caribbean...I went on that stormcarib.com site. Oh my. The jail in Grenada was destroyed and all the prisoners are on the loose. Looting and total chaos...

Highbay, glad to see you're OK. And just in time to weather another storm. I'm beginning to think that we should blame it all on the last election. Although as I recall we voted for Gore, it was the Supreme Court that disagreed with us.

My parents live in central Florida, so I'd be thrilled if Ivan gave them a miss, but Floridians should take credit for their ability to recover from hurricanes. I know it's very, very tough, but the people in Florida seem to have a good grip on how to prepare beforehand--and get back on their feet afterwards.
Do any of the models forecast a potential hit near New Orleans? We saw a documentary a while back showing how New Orleans would be practically destroyed if it was hit with a major hurricane with torrential rains...apparently their infrastructure is really inadequate for a severe weather event.

Leona, why did you really think that your comparison between blizzards and hurricanes had to be made? Having lived through some tremendous ice storms and blizzards, I can say that there really is no comparison to the damage that a hurricane to do. And digging out after a 26-inch snow storm is usually accomplished by a plow. Please show a little compassion.

Hi TG!Did you stay out of the flooding there in Tampa? How did you do on the power outage. We also lost our phone lines and got them back up yesterday. I live in a "dead" area for cell phones. Thank goodness we got a generator- bought it in the Keys after Georges. It was a lifesaver this time.

We had a home on Cudjoe Key in the Florida Keys, and that particular key was hit pretty hard. We lost the roof on our house, and there wasn't a tree left standing in our yard. Our boat ended upon the other end of the canal....on land.

HB, we lost power for about 25 hrs. on our block, but the next block over never lost theirs, go figure. I was cat-sitting for people out of town so me and DH went there. My son (15yo) had parties for four days so this will surely be his hurricane to remember. Our neighborhood did not flood but there was flooding south, east and west of us. Davis Islands and north Tampa were hit especially hard. Lots of trees down everywhere. Family in Lakeland bought a Sears generator after Charley and darned if it didn't crap out after 4 hrs. They were royally peeved.
Hang in there (that phrase has never been more appropriate).

I feel sorry for those Island nations which have been nearly destroyed. They don't have the wide resources that we do. And I hope Florida doesn't have yet a third disaster this season. I don't know how people in Florida can handle all this. I have had severe property damage due to severe snow fall and blizzards in '97. We had over 30 ft. of drifted snow which crushed a 5000 sq. ft. barn, and our home came near to being crushed and destroyed. But it was a freak winter which only comes once in a lifetime. Not like these hurrcanes.
I with Florida the best.

I didn't have time to read all of these posts but I am shocked at how heartless some can be. I guess these heartless posters never had any hard times. Lucky them. Anyways, up here in Maine everyone I talk to is concerned about Florida and the people there, and hoping that they can withstand yet another thrashing. Hang on Florida, the season is half over.

Yikes. I posted w/o seeing your last post. I guess you should wait to put that roof back on. LIke maybe after November or something. What a season this is.
So, yes, I think you should go to the graveyard and send a few curses their way. 5 generations, zowie. You must be the queen mother of hurricanes.

We lost our roof to Georges which was in 1998, and that was down in the Keys. It took months to get it repaired, and we wound up losing all of our drywall and subflooring. We gutted the house, replaced the entire interior...then sold the house in 2002. They now have Ivan bearing down on them.
We are supposed to leave for Maine on Wednesday for three weeks and I simply don't know if that'll happen.

If I didn't have to work Sun., Mon., and Tues., I'd just leave now. But when Frances was coming our way, hospital administrators threatened termination for any nurse taht called off for any reason. Which I do understand. Soooo, depending on the path Ivan chooses...we'll take it a day at a time.
Also glad to hear that you fared well with Frances!

The Florida Keys are begining a mandatory evacuation for residents tomorrow. They are not going to open hurricane shelters for this storm.
They want everyone out of the Florida Keys.
Two people were killed in Ohio because of Frances and the flooding.
