Williamsburg is a piece of history, and you will buy admission to it to see the various buildings, and the "enactment" of the types of crafts that were extant at the time. It is BEAUTIFUL.
You can have a smaller experience very near Raleigh by going to Old Salem in Winston Salem--a restored Moravian town with its crafts, and the really fine Museum of Southern Decorative Arts, for a history of furniture in the South.
Ashville is fun--has Biltmore House--the largest house in the US. More like a castle. The colors in the mountains would be pretty.
Personally, you are in NC--there is lots to do. YOu can go over to Chapel Hill and Hillsborough and have fun shopping.
You could go to the beach--it is much different from your Pacific beaches.
Personally, if you want to take a "short flight" (or a 3-4 hour drive) I'd probably go to Charleston. It is, in my opinion, the most "European" city in the US in its walkability and history and good dining. It would be just right for 3 days and a LOT more accessible (easy to get around) than Williamsburg. Can also go to the beach there if for nothing else than a good seafood dinner.
