Is the Strand worth a visit if...

...I searched their website for all the books I am interested in and they have only a few, all of which are more expensive than Amazon? There were about 50 I am looking for, all out of print.

I ask because, well, they're reputed to be one of the best used bookstores. I've been in there once before, many years ago, and their sections on my interests were scant then.

Along the same lines, does anyone know of a Manhattan used bookstore that specializes in architecture and urbanism? (The Urban Center Books only sells in-print.)

Thanks much...

The store has many many more books that what they show on their website, and of course, stock changes daily, so if you are looking for specific items, it could still be worth a trip. Have you called them asking about specific titles? With a list of so many items you are willing to purchase, perhaps they might be able to pre-shop for you?

Are you quite certain? I called the bookstore before posting, and the woman I spoke with said that no, if it's not on the website they don't have it. Do you have a contact person over there that I could call, then?

Yes, my original thought was that they could pre-shop for me, but as they didn't appear to have many in stock....

So I posted here, because Fodorites know everything.

Here's a good blog w/ a list of NYC bookstore specializing in architecture - used books is a bit of a problem, there are so few left now-

you might try Skyline Books at 13 w. 18TH St, 212-675-4773

No, Sorry I don't have a contact you can use. A friend who works in a library does have a contact, but she told me it's only for institutional use.
I don't really see how they could have everything online as they get constant deliveries, and if you've ever seen the carts outdoors with the really old stuff--well I can't imagine its worth it for them to process every little item like those and get it on the website, But I guess looking through those piles would be a bit too needle in the haystack for you.

Email from the Strand:

****
Dear E_M,

The only books not represented on our website are dollar books and some used mass market paperback fiction. If you are searching for out-of-print books of any value, they will certainly be listed in our catalog, if we currently have them in stock.

Thank you for your inquiry.

So that answers that.

I will check out the website posted-thanks!
