Is May a bad time to go to Maine?

We were thinking of going to Maine to Acadia Nat'l Park over Memorial day weekend but I heard about the foggy weather and black flies around that time. Should we try to go another time later in the summer or could we still enjoy it in May?

It depends. How do you feel about foggy weather and black flies? ;~)

Perhaps somebody else knows how definite both of these would be.

In my mind, there is never a bad time to visit the coast of Maine. You are talking about late May, and the black flies should be gone from that area by then. The weather could be absolutely summerlike or absolutely early springlike! If it were me, I would go.

I love Maine - but not in May or June. May will still be cold, the water will be frigid, and what happens when the water is frigid and the air temps are warmer, you will have an almost constant fog. The coastline is so incredibly beautiful that it's a shame not to be able to see it!

I've been many times and once thought I would take advantage of shoulder season in June. There's a reason it's shoulder season and the prices are reduced. The weather was bad, just too foggy and depressing to appreciate.

If you can, reschedule for later in the summer or September. Much, much better then.

Spring in New England is beautiful. We visited the Searsport area around June 15th last year and lupine were in full bloom. The Blue Hill peninsula is very pretty and not far from Acadia. Yes we had some rain and fog but also some gorgeous days. I'm guessing lilacs will be blooming around Memorial day. Summer visitors miss a real pretty time of year.

I think May is a little to early for that area. We were in Arcadia in July a few years back, and even then it wasn't that warm.(not swimming weather). It was probably in the Mid seventies which is very nice if you don't plan on going to the beach! I imagine May is a whole lot cooler! I to have heard spring in very foggy.
Have fun whenever you decide to go. Bar Harbor is a very nice little town. We loved it there!!

I don't know about on the coast, but in the north woods, the black flies are terrible in late May

I agree with joesorce...I've been to Maine in September 3 times, and the crowds going home is a big plus! My weather was still in the 70's most of the time and just lovely.
