Is it really THAT hot?

My husband and I are thinking of a trip to Las Vegas in July, but people are telling us that it will be far too hot to be enjoyable. We're used to New York summers - is the heat in Las Vegas that unbearable?

We are in Vegas during the summer months and yes it is hot hot hot but you can deal with it. Really depends on what you are there to do. Skip going to the Hoover Dam or any golf. By the pool is really warm but one can just stay IN the pool. Try to sleep later and stay out later. The casinos are all so cold. I would not hesitate. Really just depends on what you are there to do.

Elaine: My husband and I go to Vegas once a year with friends, and we go in the summer months because of the heat. We've been there when its been around 109, but it's a dry heat (whatever that means!) so you don't get all sticky. And, if it gets too hot for you, run into a casino for a few hours and cool off. The heat is part of the attraction for us. Have a great time -- much to see and do!

BE CAREFUL. The dry heat can fool you - I once got sun poisoning, with the hallucinations, vomiting, everything. I really like the heat, so now I am super super careful about sunscreen and I drink tons of water.
You still need to carry a sweater though, because the casinos are like meat lockers.

Elaine,
We are going in July, were there last July, and although it certainly is hot, it is not prohibitive. Just hanging out at the pool is good advice, as is staying out for a good part of the night and not waking up until late afternoon. There is a definite difference between dry heat and heat coupled with humidity. Dry heat does assault you, but for some reason, it is more bearable than humidity. Nothing is worse than that sticky, wet feeling that humidity gives you. Also, if you are not driving or renting a car, depending on where you are staying, some hotels have shuttles to and from each other so you don't have to get out in the heat and walk. Just be sure to pack light colored, lightweight clothing, and have fun!

I live in Phoenix where the heat is the same and I go to Vegas in the summer. I agree with everything that is said here. The casinos are cold and the heat is dry. Just use common sense, remember hotels are farther away then there large signs make them seem, so don't try to walk it. My only other suggestion is if you are driving try to park in a garage. To me that is the worst part of the heat, is getting in a hot car and waiting for the air conditioner to cool off. As everyone has mentioned, enjoy the pool and stay indoors and don't worry about cranking the air conditioner in the room.

I have been many times during the summer. Get an early tee time if you want to play golf. Be careful about heatstroke. I had been in the sports book for a few hours drinking beer until I went outside to hang out by the pool. In about 30 minutes I had all the symptoms of heat stroke: dizzy, nauseous, etc. And I was young and healthy! So be careful at the pool, stay away from alcohol. Save it for the evenings!

We've been in LV in July before, and we're going again in July this summer. I'm not an outdoor person, and the casinos are very cool, so I'm happy. See you there!
