To my understanding, minimum purchase requirements do violate the agreement between the merchant and the card company (at least in the case of AMEX).

My partner is in the industry and takes a great deal of interest when we find places that violate the terms (you can report them, etc).

In Chicago area the American Express and Discover cards both are not accepted in many venues. I asked at a small sports show by us and he takes neither. It is because the costs to him are much more. This merchant will actually give you a small discount if you don't use a credit card at all, which I think is fine by me.

But most places do advertise openly with large signs near the entrance or the cash register which credit cards they do take.

Minimum purchase requirements are extremely common in New York, from bodegas to retail stores to restaurants.

Finally, very few restaurants in NYC accept only Amex. That's a stupid business decision, so it's rare. MANY restaurants, however, do NOT accept Amex at all.

TxTravelPro, Yes I thought this practice was illegal. And no, I don't think that cops arrest the merchant. Did I say that??? Don't read something into my post which I did not say, imply, or suggest.
