Inn at Mt. Ada - Catalina
My husband and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in Catalina. The Inn at Mt. Ada was recomended to me. When I called to check the price, I choked!! Can this place possibly be worth $480.00 a night? OUCH Have you been there?

We haven't stayed at the exclusive Inn at Mt. Ada, but we sure would have if we wanted to splurge. We, too have heard it is a wonderful experience. We checked out the new Snug Harbor Inn which was beautifully appointed and in the $200-$300 range. They have a website which describes the accommodations. We looked at their rooms, but did not stay since they were booked solid. They only have 6 rooms which all are in a Nantucket cottage theme. Hardwood floors, great fabrics, the works!

It really depends on what you're looking for. You're obviously going in "high season" for those rates to apply. In the winter...the rates are more reasonable and you can sometimes get an upgrade without an extra charge. The Inn is lovely and includes everything. It's got the only decent dining facilities on the Island. It's actually the dining room of the Inn, but those not staying can make reservations for meals that run about $40 per person (free to guests). Breakfast, lunch, afternoon sherry, wine and nibbles before dinner, and cookies, soda, coffee, tea and fruit are available all day. The views are spectacular! But don't JUST stay at the Inn. Included in the price of your room is a golf-cart (no car rental on the island) to cruise around the city of Avalon. The carts rent, in town, for about $30 an HOUR. If you can afford it...reserve Mrs. Wrigley's room. It has a seperate little library and a nice big bathroom. The upholstered, 4-poster bed is very romantic. If you're really ready to spend...Mr. Wrigley's suite has it's own patio/balcony area...and even more room. We love the whole experience...from the boat ride over to the views from almost every room of the cruise ships moving through the channel. I think it's worth the $$$$$...but it is steep.

Thanks for the tips. I found the website you mentioned very helpful. It also shows 2 other Inns, the Seacrest and the Old Turner. Snug Harbor looks good as well. All are much more affordable. I wonder if you really get what you pay for in this instance?

Alysa,
I often cruise to Catalina on my boat and always look at the mansion on top of the hill and wonder if I'll ever stay there. It's the Wrigley mansion that has been converted into the Inn. The views are unbeatable and I understand that all meals are included. If the price is too steep, your better off staying in town and spending that money on other activities. I'm not sure if any hotel is worth $480.00 per night, but your 20th anniversary only comes around once. Be sure to visit the Busy Bee for breakfast.
