I am considering an evening to celebrate my husband's and my own birthdays in February. We only live an hour away, so we could go just for dinner. But, I was also considering staying overnight to make our weekend extra special. I can not find any recent opinions on the site, and would like to find out what others think about the Inn these days. Also, if we stayed the night, what activities are there in the area or at the Inn.

I'll have to defer to others about the current state of staying at the Inn, but the brand new Washingtonian magazine just voted the restaurant as one of the top very few in the entire area. So far as things to do: You're in the country, quite, and the only things to do are to track down interesting antique shops, take a short ride up to Sperryville, a teeny tiny town with a couple of nice shops, drive up to Skyline Drive (though February could be icy), or over to Luray. There are wineries within a half hour as well. Where the Inn is located, there are a couple of small country blocks with some interesting shops -- art, jewelry, gourmet food. Very quiet and small but amazingly nice. When we go to that area (my sister lives up the road) we go just for the peace and quiet of the country, and the scenery. I'm sure the Inn could advise you about the locations and directions to wineries and shops.

You might backtrack to Flint Hill (5 miles down a country lane) to try Sunday brunch at Four and Twenty Blackbirds, another highly recommended restaurant with brunch their specialty.

I just made reservations there for my daughter and her husband to celebrate their anniversary (in May) and our gift to them for a week night stay is $500 (one room was a little less), so it's expensive to stay there. Dinner also is quite costly -- I believe they quoted me over $200 for both of them (without wine). It's absolutely gorgeous there & food is THE BEST, so it will be memorable.

I sent my sister and brother-in-law last year for their anniversary (it has been a few years since I have been back and it was at least 7 for them)the report they filed was grand! The staff top notch, the food, memory making, the yard, the garden provide fresh herbs, and the rooms make for a perfect respite!

The dining experience is the draw, and the meals can cost more than the rooms if you have a penchant for fine wine.
The guest rooms are not on the same high level as the dining room, though they're certainly OK.
Nice, though, to be able to waddle back to the room after a great meal and blissfully plop down without having to get in the car and drive somewhere.

Conde Nast just gave it a great rating--for dinner and the rooms, I believe--in the TOP 100 issue.

Washingtonian said that the prix fixe dinner is about $125 per person (plus plus); for an additional $60 per person, they will choose a selection of wines appropriate for each course.

We stayed at a nearby B&B and only went for dinner which was fantastic. Dinner prices were lower on Sun-THurs so that helps if you can schedule it then.

My husband and I celebrated our honeymoon at The Inn 4 1/2 years ago. We went back last year for our anniversary. I still can't figure out what all the fuss is about. For $800 per night ( dinner and a room) there are alot of places a couple can go and actually have something to do. The place has zero facilities, the town is small, but hey, everyone should do it once.

Do yourself a favor, enjoy the wonderful dinner but the rooms are certainly not worth the amount of money. We paid $800 for the night and wished we would had put the money to better use. Hope you enjoy.
