Info on Newark Airport Area

I will have a 4 hour layover in Newark next week and would like recommendations on either a shopping mall that is within an easy taxi distance or a really good Italian (or other type) restaurant. Thank y ou

There is an IKEA (www.ikea.com) just across I-95 from the airport. I also believe (but can't confirm) that there is an outlet mall just south of the airport off I-95.

Betsy is correct about the outlet mall. I can't recall the name but was at IKEA two weeks ago and saw signs for it. Newark has a very large Portuguese population and there are sopme fantastic Portuguese restaurants in the "Ironbound" section of the city, not far from the Amtrak station. I'd guess that you could shop or go there to eat but wouldn't have time for both. I've eaten at Seabra's Marqueseria and also at Iberian Peninsula. Both are very good but the former has a quiter atmosphere. Be forewarned - portions are VERY large!

Jersy Gardens, a large outlet mall, is indeed beside IKEA. Exit turnpike at 13A and follow signs for Jersey Garden . You can get further information at http://www.jerseygardens.com

There is an outlet center up in Secaucus, about 15 min from the airport.

With a four hour layover, I am not sure I would risk leaving the airport. Unless your bags are checked through to where you are going.

Newark has been a bit of a mess lately with departures and delays.

The terminal is fairly large and there are a few shops to wander around and a good bookstore.

To get anywhere you would have to get a cab and then need to find one to get back.

Also the airlines are getting tougher about checkings lately, I got there a half hour recently before a flight and my seat was already given away. Had to wait until the very end and finally got on the plane.

Good luck with your trip.
