Has anyone discovered how to make inexpensive domestic long distance phone calls from a hotel. I'm aware that using a calling card which bills my home phone number saves a substantial amount on international calls, but I have not found that to be the case calling within the continential U.S. Recently paid 80 cents per minute using an AT&T calling card on a weekend call between Philadelphia and New York.

It is my understanding that the 10-10 numbers cannot be used from a hotel room, since the charge is billed back to the calling number.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

My Sprint calling card is 35 cents a minute. But I think I saw a Sprint promotion recently that has all calls including calling cards at 10 cents a minute. There may be some kind of monthly fee, there was some reason I didn't check into it.

This may be more nusance than you want to deal with but look at www.broadpoint.com. I have found this to extremely useful for short calls while travelling and the price cannot be beat.

I use a prepaid card(bought at Costco)for calls made domestically and also when traveleling out of the country. Most hotels allow you to make 800 calls at no cost...so it is easy to make calls from your room.

I usually go down to the lobby and use a pay phone and charge to my calling card. No need for extra charges.

Using a calling card that bills your home phone is a pricey option no matter how it's done (from pay phone or from phone in your room). I agree that pre-paid calling cards are the ticket. They work from pay phones or regular phones since an 800 # is used to access. I pay anywhere from 10 to 15 cents per minute depending on card size and where purchased. There is a surcharge for pay phone use (equivalent to two minutes of time) but it's still cheaper than any other method. Just be aware that in some hotels (NYC is best example) there is a minimum charge per call and per minute even on local calls - in these I always use a pay phone for outgoing calls. Best solution at this point is to bring my Sprint cell phone which has no LD charges and costs me 10 cents per minute from anywhere.
