In New York with a 5 year old on a budget

Hi from South Africa. I'm visiting NYC for the first time with my wife and 5 year old daughter from 13 July for 6 nights. I've booked a room through HRN on the internet at the Manhattan Broadway Hotel, which is apparently new or recently renovated. I can't find any information on the hotel except that it is within my budget. Please help. I also need to know if it is safe in NYC travelling with a child. Any suggestions of an itinerary ?
Thanks.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I looked in the NY City phone book and there is no hotel with that name -- there is a Broadway Hotel at 104th st. all the hotels w/ B'way in their name are in the 100's and you really don't want to stay in that area. you would have to take a subway to get into the mid-town and downtown areas, and that particular area of ny city is not at all the best -- especially w/ your wife and child. you should decide on a hotel by location -- 30's to 60's. it may be more expensive, ny is not a cheap city, but it is a much safer location. as far as what to do -- take her to the central park zoo where she can actually pet some of the animals, specific areas of the museumof natural history: dinosaurs, biodiversity, planetarium, check with the NY City visitors center -- they always have listings of child-oriented events.

There is a Children's Museum in NYC. Also, on the 8th floor of Macy's there is an attraction for kids - Macyland. Just walking & playing in Central Park would be fun - it's huge and beautiful. Also, you can take the Staten Island Ferry for free and have a great view of the skyline and the Statue of Liberty - particularly nice at dusk. Have fun!

http://www.playbill.com
has a free membership and offers deals to various hotels at a discount. Plays at a discount at certain times are also listed. It is more convenient than standing on the 1/2 price ticket line.
Please update us when you are back from your trip.

I recommend this hostel. It is upper west side, almost in Harlem, but I did not find it to be a bad area at all - and I am VERY paranoid about my personal safety. It's in the same neighborhood as the Broadway Hotel.

Hi ..

I'm a lifelong New Yorker and had never heard of this hotel but I did check out its location and while it is at 101st Street, it is in a good area around West End Avenue. People pay hundreds of thousands to buy apartments there so how bad can this location be? I know nothing of the hotel itself.
I have two young children and there are many things to do with kids. The Staten Island Ferry is a great idea. You'll be out on the water and it's free. Much better than the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island which tend to have very long lines in the summer. Why not go to the top of the Empire State Building or the World Trade Center. Both sell tickets. And, with a five year old, you can't lose by visiting FAO Schwartz toy store on Fifth Avenue around 59th Street. It's the flagship store and a fantasy for kids. Central Park is also lots of fun. Visit the carousel in Central Park. There's a terrific playground for kids down near Battery Park City also but I'm not sure it's worth going out of your way for. A five year old will not appreciate the usual tourist attractions of New York, I'm afraid, but will be delighted by the sideshows on the streets. The South Street Seaport always has street performers who are excellent and perform for free..check that out and it's right on the water. You can also take a sailboat ride down there but it's a bit expensive. Have a good time.
