"I'm going to Kansas City"

I'll be in Kansas City soon on business and wanted to know what kinds of things there was to do there. I've heard it is a nice little city and I'm anxious to go but wanted things to do, anything will be helpful. Thanks!!

I spent a short weekend there and had a good time. I would recommend the Pheonix jazz club. But I do remember that the clubs and bars closed early 1:00 or so. So eat early and go out early.

Check out the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, Harry Truman Museum, Hallmark Center, Negro League Baseball Museum (if interested in baseball history), and National Trails Museum

Take in a Royals (baseball) game, go to the City Market (has frequent open air concerts on the weekends-sometimes free)and go through the Steamboat Arabia Museum, visit the clubs in the Westport area, go shopping on the Plaza, visit the zoo (and take in the IMAX show), take a trolley ride around town (I get on at Crown Center but it has many mid-town stops) or go to an outdoor music concert at Sandstone (rock and/or country bands). Check out www.kcstar.com and click on Just Go for more ideas. You'll love Kansas City!

I live here in KC! Highlights would be Science City at Union Station near Crown Center at 25th and Main, Oceans of Fun/Worlds of Fun waterpark and amusement park north of the river at I-435 and Parvin Road, the Kansas City Zoo near I-435 and Gregory, the Westport/Plaza area, around 47th and Main up to 39th & Main and west, with much fine dining, shopping and bars to walk to, resembles Rodeo Drive in LA on a much smaller scale, the Sports Complex, near I-70 and Blue Ridge for a Royals baseball game. Grab a yellow pages when you get here, it has a directory in the fron of major attractions and maps, things to do, depending on the weather, length of your stay. East/SE KC would be the "bad" part of town to avoid, south is suburban, malls,OK, north is safe good suburban area, midtown is the entertainment district with Plaza/Westport, west side is hispanic areas with many great places to eat on Southwest Blvd. You'll love it!

Don't forget to have some WONDERFUL KC barbeque while you are here. Everyone has their own opinions on this but I think the best BBQ in town is Arthur Bryant's Barbeque at 1727 Brooklyn. The best sauce hands down! A Kansas City original. Enjoy!

(Other great BBQ places in town are Gates and Rosedale -- skip KC Masterpiece, it's overrated.)

I would suggest Martin City (south of KC about 15 minutes) for GREAT BBQ. The resturaunt has changed its name but I think that it is Smokestack or Jack Fiorella's Smokestack. It is incredible. I personally think that Arthur Bryants sauce is way to vinegary.

I enjoy the Plaza also. Try Plaza III for good steaks. If you are taking your wife she will enjoy the shopping that the plaza has to offer. The fountains are lovely.

Try Westport for fun. It is on the Missouri side so the bars close at 3 a.m. on the Kansas side they close at 2. The casinos are nice if you are in to that kind of thing...but they are casinos. The NCAA Hall of Fame and Museum is in Overland Park, KS.

Have fun.

I too live and KC & would agree w/ just about everyone above on places to go. However, I used to live in L.A. and the Plaza is nothing like Rodeo Drive. I also highly recommend Arthur Bryants for barbeque. While I personnaly go to the one downtown, I'd recommend their other location at the Station Casino to someone from out of town. Jackie Onasis's rated it the best barbeque in the world!

Hey David pumpy - I just got back from Key Largo and I MUST reply to your post - I grew up here in KC but I go to LA about twice a year so I know what it looks like. I think Rodeo Drive DOES resemble the Plaza in KC. The building styles, the parking garages, the statues, the storefronts. The first time I went to Beverly Hills, I was struck how many similarities there were between KC and LA. The beauty of this message board is for everyone to express their opinion and the reader can draw a conclusion as to whether they agree or not. Many different opinions form a picture, ya know?? Don't contradict other posters, but express your own interpretation and let the traveler decide for himself!!

I live in L.A. Area and go to Rodeo quite often and I must say I prefer the Plaza in K.C. We go to K.C. a couple times a year and I always look forward to shopping on the Plaza. Enjoy your trip.
