I'm a virgin to the Florida Keys
I've never been down to the Keys and I'm considering leaving on Tues November 9th just to check it out. I'm 42 and I would like to visit all I can for the week I'm down, I currently reside in Vero Beach but my problem is WHERE to go, it seems a little overwhelming on which key I would really like best. Also I would need a pet friendly hotel for my dog.
Of course I enjoy an alchoholic beverage from time to time but that's not the reason why I want to go down there. I want to experience the Keys for all it's beauty. Any suggestions???

Stay here -

Read destination tips from the Fodors editors and trip reports from Fodorites.
You'll be midway in the Keys so you can wander up and down to see and do stuff - or just hang out and relax.
We used to take boat trips with Capt. Anne Baxter. It looks like she's retired, but there's the guy who took over her business. Snorkel, sightseeing, fishing, etc -

We used to go every year for a week - and thought it was perfect too, especially if you are traveling with a pet.
If you like to snorkel, take a trip out of Pennekamp State Park. They have glassbottom boats too, if you don't like to snorkel.

Read some of the guidebooks and trip reports. Staying in Islamorada means you can easily go up or down the keys and take a day trip to Key West, but have lots to do if you don't want to go more than 5 miles too.
The marina is in front of here -

My favorite place for a sunset dinner is on the second floor at the Zane Gray Lounge -

Their smoked fish spread and cocanut shrimp are to die for.
The Islamorada Fish Company is also there.
Stop by Robbie's to feed the tarpon -

There's a little beach at the White Gate but you may want to check out http://www.bahiahondapark.com/
Mainly, we'd go just to relax. There are grills outside of the cottages if you want to cook out and just relax at the resort. It's a very casual place, but IMO magical. You turn off the busy highway and it's like you are going back in time to an old Florida tropical hideaway. Enjoy.
