I would like advice on Potomac cruises or different ideas of things to do in DC after seeing the usual sights. Is the Voice of America office still open?? Thanks everyone!

Just across the river is a great new museum called the Newseum. It is a super way to see how news has been delivered us over the years. They've got a web site. You can make a video tape of yourself as a news, sports or weather reporter. There are lots of fun exhibits.

Emily, the Newseum is in the Gannett complex in Rosslyn, which in turn is on Metro's Blue line.

There have been several threads over the past month that deal extensively with unusual things to do in DC; you may want to access those threads using the search mechanism.

You asked about Potomac cruises -- there are several that have started in recent years. I know one is called the Odyssey but I've never taken it and haven't heard how it is, but you could look it up when you get here or call information to find out prices, etc. One place along the Potomac that is very interesting if you haven't been there is Mt. Vernon (George Washington's home). It is a short distance outside the city, not far from Alexandria (which is fun too).

Fun to go to the Mall at Pentagon City to see the 2 Star Generals opening the door for the 3 Star Generals at the Mall....Another fun day would be to take the Sub out to Alexandria and have lunch and a stroll. There are so many nice restaurants and galleries in Georgetown you could do a day there. I love to go to the Smithsonian, especially the gem exhibit and the aerospace museum there. Our congressman arranges private tours of the capitol and his staff is quite nice...you could contact yours, too. They give such insight to the mechanics of government if you are bringing kids, this is a good experience I think. Go the smaller, privately owned museums, some of which have small concerts in the evenings in thier foyers. Go out along the canal banks where mules used to pull barges and have a picnic. Check with the chamber of commerce for goings-on the week you will be there...you could find a concours or a festival that would be fun and different. Check with your hotel conceirge, too. Its a great town!
