IAHTS Maui discount card

I recently saw a Web site that mentions activity discounts on Maui using the "IAHTS/Aloha Gold Discount Card". It did not mention price of the card or how to obtain. Does anyone have info or has used this card, and is it worth the money?

Bill: We visit Maui several times each year, and it seems as if there is a different "discount card" available each visit. Why go to the trouble of wondering if your "card" will even be good (accepted by Maui businesses), when the "Maui Aloha Pack" (which we use) has been around for years and supplies all the currently-available discounts from Maui restaurants and activities. No expiration dates on their coupons, and the price is right at just $9.95 each. They're on the internet at http://www.maui-info.com/2aloha.html.

Bill,

The above answer to your question is pure advertising, not supposed to be allowed on here. Most of the stuff you get in that pack are things you can pick up free off the brochure racks at the airport! I've checked!

Various people associated with this business are always pushing these packs, trying to make it look as though they're just your ordinary traveler being enthusiastic about it. Don't fall for it!

James...What you're saying is absolutely true with respect to the Maui Information Pack put out by this company, and they honestly advertise it as such: material "normally unavailable until arriving on Maui." They take the time to gather it all up and make it available to those planning a visit to Maui, enabling them to make plans prior to their actual trip. Their Discount Packs, however, contain discount coupons only available through the restaurants and activities, and certainly nothing available at the airport. They broker these discounts for the owners of the companies at a small price, making them available to folks anticipating a visit to Maui who don't have the time or the desire to contact each and every restaurant owner and activity owner and request their current discount offerings. I have lived on Maui 15+ years and always encourage my visitors to purchase both the Information Pack and the Discount Pack prior to their trip. It's convenient, it's inexpensive, and they always know they'll be receiving the most current discounts for the local businesses. And, I assure you that I am a very real person living in Lahaina Town, with absolutely no financial interest whatsoever in the company supplying this material.

L.A. Might Issue Bond to Pay for Police Scandal
Updated 5:06 PM ET February 17, 2000

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan on Thursday proposed issuing a $90 million bond -- backed by the city's windfall from the tobacco settlement -- to pay for scores of civil lawsuits expected from a growing police scandal.

As Riordan made his suggestion at City Hall, a judge across the road at the County Criminal Court threw out another nine convictions as being tainted by the scandal in which rogue officers are accused of shooting innocent people, planting evidence and lying on the witness stand to get convictions.

The number of convictions overturned at the request of prosecutors stood at 40 on Thursday, and each represented a potential lawsuit with damages running to several millions of dollars.

Some civil rights experts suggested the eventual tab for America's second-largest city could run as high as $400 million, making it the worst man-made disaster in the city's history.

Riordan told a news conference the $90 million bond would be worth more than $100 million with interest from investments, and there was zero risk for the city.

It will be backed by $300 million that the city will receive over 25 years from California's share of a settlement with four tobacco companies, Phillip Morris Cos. Inc. (MO.N), R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Corp. (RJR.N), Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., a unit of British American Tobacco Plc (BATS.L) (BTI.A) and Lorillard and Loews Corp.'s (LTR.N) Lorillard Tobacco Co.

``This is a good start. This will allow us to cover our liability for the first several years, I believe, and hopefully, the total liability. Though we have no way of knowing the dollar amount, we must expect and prepare for tens of millions of dollars of liability,'' Riordan said.

The proposal is expected to meet stiff opposition from city council members who must agree to it. Council members have already squabbled among themselves and with the mayor about how the windfall should be allocated.

Riordan agreed with a questioner at the press conference that he was basically telling the taxpayers of Los Angeles that money that might have gone for health and education purposes would instead be going to pay for the wrongdoings of rogue police officers.

The scandal first broke in September 1999, when rogue officer Rafael Perez began confessing to prosecutors in a bid for a lighter sentence on charges of stealing cocaine from a Los Angeles Police Department evidence locker.

Perez allegedly implicated more than two dozen of his fellow officers in Rampart Station's CRASH anti-gang unit, telling of police brutality, shootings, evidence planting and perjury.

He has said officers who shot innocent people received plaques made of playing cards with bullets through them -- a red card if the victim lived and a black card if he died.

Robert Larkins of Morgan Stanley Dean Whitter, who is acting as a consultant on the bond issue, said in essence the city was selling its rights to its share of the tobacco settlement, but because the bond was tied to that settlement, there was no risk to the city.

In other words if the tobacco companies were to go bankrupt and could not pay the full settlement, the loss would be absorbed by the bond holders. However, Larkins said, it was an attractive bond for investors.

Donna,

I didn't believe you the last time you did this song & dance, and I don't this time. You've pushed these packages just too often for me to believe you. This seems to be the only topic you discuss on this forum, and that I find a little suspicious.

Hi Bill
I'm almost afraid to answer your question,I may be accused of advertising.I vacationed in Maui last Sept. and used the AOA Gold Card and it saved us(4 adults)a nice chunk of change. It was helpful booking the Old Lahaina Luau as well as the Trilogy trip to Lanai both for considerable savings. The card is only available BEFORE you arrive in Maui, order it before you go.The cost is $20 and its good for up to 4 people,it last for a year and is transferable(pass it on to a friend?).You can order it by calling 1-800-398-9698 and ask for Gail.If you have any other questions feel free to e mail me,I wish I were headed back to Maui right now I'm freezing my butt off here in Pennsylvannia.Yes,I believe the card is worthwhile, have a great trip !!!

Charlie,

No, I don't think you're advertising. You're not on here several times a month pushing a particular product, to the exclusion of all other discussion!

And don't we all wish we were going to Maui today!!!!
