Crispo - good reliable Italian 14th between 7th and 8th
Gavroche - very pretty large garden, good not great french bistro- good steak frites, good mussels.
Istanbul Garden - take out joint w/dining room attached - surprisingly good. 14th bet. 8th and 9th
Safran - good new wave Vietnamese, very friendly people 7th Avenue at 15th St.
Chelsea Ristorante good Italian, good thin crust pizza 8th Avenue at 15th St.
Maroons 16th and 8th Ave. heavy southern/soul/Jamaican, very popular but I'm not a fan.
as Gekko says, check out menus at menupages.
I live at 7th and 15th Street - these are all my neighborhood places. Of them, Crispo is best, I think.
Mary Ann's - cheap glopy Mexican inexplicably popular. 8th Ave and 16th

Excellent tapas both tradiitonal and creative. Small restaurant, they know what they are doing.
