I-90 through Wyoming and Montana

I'll be travelling I-90 (westward) for the first time. I normally take #2 across to 15 when heading toward Alberta, Canada but thought I would enjoy a change of scenery. I was wondering what the highway is like through Wyoming and Montana? (mountains etc.) From Montana, I plan to take #87 up to 15.

I-90 from the South Dakota border to Billings Montana doesn't really go though the mountains. If you have the time, take the short detour up to Devils Tower National Monument, WY.

I-90 seems out of the way compared to Hwy 2.

I 90 is a little south of US 2, but you can cruise at 75 to 80 mph virtually without opposition.

I suggest that you make one little deviation in your route to save a few miles. Take state route 3 out of Billings to where it intersects with US 87 north and west of Billings. Less traffic, usually, and a little shorter. The scenery is zilch, however, in my opinion. I am not sure it is worth the meandering. Just more Montana semi desert arryos and mesa tops.

Thanks for the info about I-90. It is quite a bit farther south than 2 but I'm driving from the Detroit area around Chicago. Normally I have to go north a fair ways to get to 2 so I thought this seemed just as direct. I checked Mapquest and the mileage difference is about 200 miles, give or take. If there's nothing extra special to see via 90 maybe I'll save the gas and stick to the old route.

On I-90 in South Dakota is Badlands National Monument and Mt. Rushmore.

Like I mentioned Devils Tower National Monument (Where they filmed Close Encounters) is just a little side trip.

If you really want scenic then from Sheridan, WY take Hwy 14 across the mountains and drive thru Yellowstone.

Thanks again Utahtea. You've convinced me to try the I-90 route. We'll definately visit Mt. Rushmore and hopefully have time to check out Devil's Tower National Monument. I'll let you know how the trip went when we get back. We're leaving in a few hours.

Be sure to stop at the Little Big Horn battlefield site right on I-90 in Montana. Very moving.
