I-40 Rockslide near Tennessee border

My husband and I are driving from Cary to Asheville, NC in a couple of weeks. In the newspaper today there is a story about a rockslide over the weekend shutting down
I-40 at mile marker 2.6 west of Asheville. Since we have never been in that area, I am hoping that someone who lives near or is familiar with that area can tell me if our drive might be affected by it. Thankfully it doesn't appear that anyone was killed.
Thank you for your help.

I drove that section in March. Looks like you have a very long detour:

You're talking about Cary, NC? The rockslide shouldn't affect your drive much - it happened west of Asheville and you'd be coming from the east, unless there's a different Cary you're talking about.

We live in TN and we heard on the news today that this section will probably be closed for at least three months.

Thanks to all of you for taking time to reply. We are hoping that if we get off I-40 at exit 53, we will be able to get to where we are staying using back roads and our GPS. (Yes, it is Cary, NC)

You can take hwy 25/70 from I-26 and then thru hotsprings to newport,tn whick puts you right back on I-40. Only 30 mins longer than regular I-40 instead of taking I-26 to I-81 to I-40 which is about 3 hours longer.

BarbK, if you're only going as far as Asheville, you should be fine. The interstate isn't closed until exit 20, about 30 miles west of Asheville.

Oops - meant to add the NC Department of Transportation web site for the slide:

This should be a non-event for you - in fact I-40 traffic should be lighter than normal since the road is completely closed west of Asheville. Just take it all the way to Asheville.
