Stayed in a garden room in Feb. 2001 for 7 ni. and never saw any bugs. My brother just came back from the Hyatt and had a great time. We both stayed there for a week last year and the hotel has not changed! Stayed at the Four Seasons also and the rooms at the Hyatt are very clean.! Who is that out there bashing the Hyatt? Sounds like shades of "why I hate San Francisco" is at it again. Someone needs to get off their disibility insurance and get a real job. Too much time on someone's hands!!!

Stayed at the Hyatt in February and loved it. Rooms were very nice, not the poshist but certainly clean and well appointed. I did NOT see any cockroaches or bugs. Please!!! I enjoyed the grounds and pools and the Anara Spa is to die for. Try a mini-day at the spa, and for sure have a facial. One of the best facials I have ever enjoyed. The Stevenson's Library bar is fantastic, and sit out on the veranda and have a single malt scotch and a cigar. HEAVENLY!!! The Hyatt at Poipu is one of the better hotels on the island of Kauai. I do not understand the bashers....but then again, you can't please a complainer.

We booked the Hyatt for our honeymoon this Fall - considering this hotel is has received top ratings for international resorts, I find it hard to believe some of these stories....maybe I'm just hoping they're not true.
Oh, and by the way, I guess we would fall into that cateogory of "poor people" since we booked a garden view room. How can you say such a narrow minded statement? Anyway, everyone told us not to spend the extra money, since they usually bump up honeymooners to nicer rooms.

I never said that the Hyatt was not a beautiful property. I talked very highly of it, however, what I said about the cockroaches is absolutely TRUE. We called down to the front desk and they promptly sent up security with a can of bug spray. My husband awoke to the feeling that something was crawling up his neck. I had him convinced that he was dreaming and told him to go back to sleep. I got up to go to the bathroom and saw this huge cockroach crawling across the floor. I threw a towel over it and waited until security came to our room. As a matter of fact it was the security man who said that this was a small roach in comparison to some of the calls he gets. This is heresay but he told us he gets plenty of calls to kill these beasts in peoples rooms. What I meant by the poor people in the garden floor rooms had nothing to do with ones economic status. I meant that it is far easier for the milipedes and roaches to just crawl right in. You must remember that Kauai is one of the wetest places on earth. Creatures like these are in abundance where there is a lot of moisture. I have travelled all over the world and this is my first experience of this nature. I am not a basher as you call it. I saw a forum that I could give my experiences on and that is all I did. Did my story sound so far fetched. My goodness, some of you people need to lighten up. Shouldn't we all tell our pro's and con's to what we know so that people have the information they are looking for? You all have a great day!

Has anyone stayed in the oceanfront room at the Hyatt? I am considering changing my reservation to another Hotel on Kauai. I know it is just someone's opinion but I had stayed on the 7th floor of a brand new Comfort Inn and had cockroaches in Charleston, SC. The first night I felt something crawling on me but thought it was just my sunburn the second night I saw the cockroaches. The manager knew there was a problem but since it was in the middle of the summer they would not close down the hotel to take care of the problem. I surely do not to relive that again. Especially since I am paying Hyatt prices! Any information would be great.

Sue,
I hate to tell you this but we were in a deluxe ocean front room. I have not stayed at any other hotels on Kauai but I fear you may have the same problem because the island is so wet. The island is very beatiful but we would never go back. We took a drive up to Princeville and we got back down to Poipu just before they closed the roads due to torrential rains. Maui is far drier and we never had any problems with roaches in our rooms. I detest bugs of any sort and so does my husband. The Hyatt felt so bad about our 2 AM visitors that they sent a lovely basket to our room the next day. I am sorry if I ruined your Hyatt dreams, but wouldn't you rather know the truth and make an informed decision? My right hand is on the bible when I say that my story is the truth. Mayby they just hadn't had their pest control done yet, I don't know but it was enough for the two of us to never go back.

grow up Katie and when you are old enough to pay for your own hotel room perhaps we will believe you. Until then you only come off as some child or someone who booked a room way out of their price range and now eats rice and beans to pay the credit card bill. Are you angry about the rice and beans Katie? Having said that rice and beans might be little exotic for you is it another night of franks and beans?
If you have trouble paying for Kauai take this anger energy and focus it on money making potential or bargain saving options that will leave you less resentful.

I also stayed in a deluxe ocean front room at the Hyatt...and never saw a bug.
The hotel is nice...it is not the nicest hotel I ever stayed in, but it was fine. The rooms are just average, there is no swimming beach, and everything is very spread out so you walk a lot...these are the negatives.
On the positive side, the pool and salt water lagoon are amazing...the restaurants are pretty good, and the overall grounds and look of the place is excellent.
Lots of kids...very big...deluxe ocean front rooms are very very far from the ocean...if you have never been to Hawaii you will be thrilled, If you have stayed at one of the Wailea resorts on Maui or at one of the top end resorts on the Big Island, you will be disappointed givent the prices, but you will be fine!

Sue certainly don't listen to Katie an idiot and someone who is just playing on here. xxx I hardly believe that she ever encountered a bug to contend with.
I have been going to Kauai for about 10 years now. I have not seen cockroaches anywhere. Certainly have never seen them at the Hyatt. I have stayed all over the island. Perhaps they have them; I just have never come across them. An important point to remember is that what moisture attracts in mainland cities is hardly the case in other environments, otherwise lookout Lake District England, lake Tahoe, wetlands anywhere? Get the idiot logic Katie supported her tall tale with?
Rarely respond this harshly but I don't understand why people come to this sight if they don't have travel info to offer.

We have been to the Grand Wailea in Maui and loved it never saw any bugs. Let me rephrase that. We never saw any bugs in our hotel. Though we did see a rat walking down one of the side streets in Lahaina. I guess that is to be expected since Hawaii does not have snakes. Anyway, We will be spending a week at the Hyatt(I guess) and a week at the Princeville in July. I guess I was looking for a Four Seasons or the Grand Wailea on Kauai. Are there any other hotels on Kauai in this same neighborhood? Thanks for your advice.

This message is for [email protected]. If you go to the beginning of these posts to around # 15 you will se that a lot of other people have experienced the same problem we did with cockroaches. You obviously have nothing better to do with your time than to insult people who talk of their true and honest experiences while traveling. Did you go back to your job as the bellboy at the Hyatt in Kauai and tell all your bellboy friends that you fixed that lady named Katie by insulting her and calling her a liar? Well I obviously was telling the truth now wasn't I Marky old boy? I have beans and hot dogs every night since my last visit to Hawaii so that I can pay for next three weeks there this fall and they were great. By the way Marky old boy, I spent two months vacationing there last year. How was your vacation in the bronx? Get a life and stop with the insults, you will feel a lot better about yourself.

Yes it is that bad. We stayed at the hotel last month. Never again! We took some of the prior Fodors posts with a grain of salt, but after staying at the hotel we felt ripped off. The grounds are nice but the rooms and the staff leaves a lot to be desired. It certainly is not worth what they are asking for per room. Next time a nice condo will do just fine.

I have stayed at the Hyatt in Kauai 3 times over the last 7 years, and am booked there again this summer. It is an absolutely fabulous hotel, and unless you want to be on the north side of the island in Princeville (which has its own attributes), I don't think there's another hotel in the area that compares.
We did feel last time we were there that the rooms had gotten a little the worse for wear, and I sent a letter to that effect after my return. In light of the number of times we'd been there, we have an upgrade to a oceanfront suite this time, and a promise that any wear has been taken care of. I believe them.
This hotel is fabulous. And, while I don't think Katie is making up her story, I have never seen a bug in any of the rooms I've stayed in there.

I stayed there 4 years ago with my family and it was one of the BEST resorts I have ever been to! I couldn't imagine it getting less that superb ratings.
It has fabulous activities for the kids and families. Wonderful views, restuarants, pools. Its just breathtaking!
