I am looking for people's recent experiences with the Hyatt Kauai. We are going in one month on our honeymoon. Did the construction falter your stay in any way?

Stayed there 2 weeks ago- no problems at all- loved the room, grounds, and food- no problems with any of it. The staff was friendly and accommodating and it is a place we would definitely return to. Some posters have bashed the Hyatt complaining about bug infested/dirty rooms and indifferent staff- I noticed none of that during my stay there.

I am at the Hyatt in 1 and half weeks what is the deal with construction?

John, you mentioned that the food was good at the Hyatt. Would you mind sharing where you ate? Also, did you spend time in the North and the South, or just the South? If you did split your vacation, which side of the island did you most enjoy? Thanks in advance.

Actually, they've filled in the lagoon and pools with cement, replaced the birds in the lobby with plastic replicas, and completely demolished the spa.

Is anyone else sick and tired of the constant postings about the Hyatt and 4S Maui's construction woes? These are some of the nicest resorts in the world and aren't going to blow their reputation by having the kind of disruptive construction you fearful voyagers have conjured in your minds. My advice is to have a nice fruity drink, read your Fodors and get excited about what should be an incredible trip to Hawaii.

As far as I know, there is no construction at the Hyatt. The construction is happening at the Waiohai which is located over a mile away at poipu beach. I believe people at Kiahuna plantation have been bummed about the construction there. Any way no worries brah, the Hyatt is one of the best hotels on Kauai.

Rachel you do want to call ahead a couple of days about room location. Go to epinions.com for more details on this. I have heard the food is not that great at the Hyatt but nearby Roy's never disappoints. I figure why spend at Hyatt hotel with so many options nearby, hotel food is rarely something to rave about.

There was minor construction going on (they are renovating the roof a small portion at a time, but place no guests in that area), but it was in an opposite wing of the hotel and even during the day, it was not noticeable enough to make a difference.
Drove up to the North Shore and it was beautiful (sunny, also), but I preferred the Hawaiian feel of the Hyatt over the Princeville although I can't comment too much as I didn't stay at the Princeville.


I mentioned the food was good (we ate at Dondero's and Tidepools), but there are close restaurants (within 3-4 miles) which are even better- especially recommend The Beach House and Roy's.

Kauai is a great place for a honeymoon. That's one of the islands that keeps the "traditional" island feeling. No high rises. Staff at the Hyatt are Hawaiians - not transplanted surfers from CA or CO like you find in Maui. Hyatt has beautiful grounds and rooms, very attentive staff. We had a breakfast deal with our stay. Buffet, but gourmet style, lots of tropical fruit, chefs doing eggs to order, & my first experience with bread pudding! Great way to start the day looking out at the swans. Dinners we ate out. Car is necessary. Don't miss the awesome chocolate dessert at Roy's. If you have any pull, or can get an upgrade when you get to Hyatt, see if you can get on the concierge floor. Free drinks - including champagne - & appetizers every evening. Congratulations & have a great trip.

We just got back from Kauai on Saturday.
We stayed at the Hyatt. The grounds are beautiful, pools, and Spa. I would highly recommend the Spa. However, the rooms are smaller than one would like. The bathroom was large except for the space the toilet was in- very cramped. We found the room dirty. Such as blood stains on the bed skirt. The Hyatt changed the bed skirt. However, that is not something nice to find upon checking in to the room. I would not recommend an oceanfront room on the 3rd, 4th, or 5th floors as you can hardly see the ocean because the palm trees and pools were in the way. The Tidepool and Dondaros resturant are nice and the food good. I guess looking back on it I would stay there again but not for the price I paid and if I did I would request the 6th floor oceanfront. We had the 4th floor. We did not find any construction on our end. We were on the shipwreck wing. I hope this helps. Enjoy!

Wendy fyi many people say that the oceanfront rooms are too distant from the ocean, so don't think you could have improved your lot by going higher.

Any word on where to request rooms that are near pool but not ground level. We got a rate of only $350 a night but I have heard that you can be stuck below level or on the ground with a pool path leading right by you living room window.

All of the oceanview rooms are near the pool. The 6th floor is not any closer to the ocean but you have a better view of the ocean than the other floors. I do not know of any rooms that were below level. I have not checked out the garden view rooms in the other wing. Hope this helps.
