Hwy 1/Big Sur Update

This article describes the road/bridge closures at this popular tourist destination. It looks like it will be a long time before you can make this beautiful drive again.

Yup, today's Caltrans inspection deemed Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge beyond repair and Hwy 1 is closed all the way from just south of Soberanes Point to Ragged Point right now

Situation sounds pretty grim. I'm actually a bit surprised there were that many tourists stranded. The area feels remote enough in summer- it would feel even more desolate during winter.

Tourism has increased a great deal and it's a busy route year round now. We try to only drive down during the week even in winter.

Yup, we are the same. We only drive up on weekdays. But, we are so going to miss our spur of the moment drives up to grab a bite to eat or go hiking. At least we still have Ragged Point. I feel really bad for the businesses up there.

Me too! Glad we made an impromptu drive last month when there was a brief window to get as far as McWay Falls.
