How wild is rafting in Jackson Hole?
Hello All,
I am trying to find a balance between an uneventful float trip and a wild white water trip near Jackson Hole. Can anyone suggest something? How wild are the rafting trips? I went once in Costa Rica, and the rapids were much stronger than expected. We want fun but aren't looking for the thrill of our lifetime. We're going in late August if that makes any difference....
Thanks!

There may be some challenging rapids somewhere in the area, but the majority of the trips in that area are best catagorized as "float" trips on the Snake. They are great fun and I highly recommend them, but they aren't white water.

There are two different types of rafting trips in the area. You can take a float trip on the Snake through the heart of Grand Teton NP--lots of scenery and wildlife, but definitely no white water. Alternatively, there are white water trips on the Snake south of Jackson Hole; the outfitters leave from town and take you by bus to the put in point. My recollection is that there are one or two Class III rapids, but by late August it should be relatively tame. Hope this helps.

We took a rafting trip from Jackson Hole several years ago in September. I think the name of the company was Mad River Rafting.
As Neil said, we were taken by bus to the starting point. There were several places on the ride that were pretty exciting (and wet), but nothing really scary that time of year.
We loved it, and hope we have a chance to try it again.

As stated above, there are two areas that offer rafting. Noth of Jackson is leasurly float trips, king of nice to sit back and relax. South of Jackson is where the action is. Depending on when you go, will describe your trip. June to early July rough. As the water lowers in the summer, it will calm down some. You will get wet and thrown around.

It's been years when we did it, but we took a raft ride out of Jacksonhole and it was pretty safe. The guide was knowledgable and we were allowed to jump in for a cold swim at one point. There was a stretch with some pretty good white water, where they video you riding through and take pictures to sell you later. It was like a good roller coaster ride...just hang on!
